THE COST of CHILDREN~

I have seen repeatedly the breakdown of the cost of raising a child, but this is the first time I have seen the rewards listed this way.

It's nice, really nice!!The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family.Talkabout sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition. But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down.

It translates into $8,896.66 a year,$741.38 a month, or $171.08 a week. That's a mere $24.24 a day! Just over a dollar an hour.Still, you might think the best financial advice says don't have children if you want to be "rich." It is just the opposite.

What do you get for your $160,140? Naming rights. First, middle, and last! Glimpses of God every day.

Giggles under the covers every night. More love than your heart can hold.

Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.

Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.

A hand to hold, usually covered with jam.

A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites, building sand castles, and skipping down the sidewalk in the pouring rain.

Someone to laugh yourself silly with no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140, you never have to grow up.

You get to finger-paint, carve pumpkins, play hide-and-seek, catch lightning bugs, and never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to keep reading the Adventures of Pooh and watching Saturday morning cartoons, going to Disney movies, and wishing on stars.

You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day.

For $160,140, there is no greater deal.

You get to be a hero just for retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof, taking the training wheels off the bike, removing a splinter, filling a wading pool, coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness the first step, first word, first bra, first date, and first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren.

You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.

In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there with God.

You have all the power to heal a booboo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, so one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost.

ENJOY YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS IF YOU HAVE THEM

They are worth every single penny.

This is exactly why my DH and I want to adopt. We think it's a good investment! ;) And we can't wait to reap the rewards! :)

Thanks for posting this--I really needed to read this today. 13-yr. old DD and I went a couple of rounds this morning, and for a fleeting moment I wondered why I ever had kids. :D

Thanks for the reminder!

Well worth the cost...:)

Thanks, piratesmate!!!! So true. And continued best to you guys, Liz. Priceless, in spite of all the trials. :)

Thanks for the smile! Caitlyn is worth every dime:)

I'd just like to chime in about the cost of furchildren for all the furparents here. While I dont know the exact cost of rearing pets, I am willing to bet it has gone into the 6 digit range , or at least the 5 digit range.

What did/do I get for my $$$$$??

The joy of knowing I made a difference in an animal's life. Knowing I gave it a better life than what it could of had.

Naming rights. First, middle, and last! Glimpses of God every day, since an animal is one of God's creatures.

Purrs and cuddles on the covers, or under the covers, or on your lap every night. More love than your heart can hold.

Cuddly feelings when you hug your cat/dog, and seeing their little faces that greet you when you come through the door .

Endless wonder and alert over outside sounds, the birds that fly by, or the lone fly that zooms through the house!

A head to pat and scratch, which soothes both your soul and his/hers.

A partner (if you have a dog) for flying kites, picnicing, jogging, walking relaxing in the yard or skipping down the sidewalk in the pouring rain or playing frisbee or catch/fetch.

Someone to laugh yourself silly with no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day. Pets are a great form of entertainment with their antics and they love you no matter what happens. They will never tell you "no" or "I dont wanna!" or "I hate you!"

You get to buy your pets stuff at Xmastime, have stockings with their names on them, and can even have them pose with santa!

You have an excuse to keep going into pet shops and buying goofy squeaky toys.

You get to frame photos of your furkids, and show them off to others!

You get to be a hero just for opening the can of the "good" pet food, getting the toy out from behind the sofa, or bringing home a bone or catnip

You get a front row seat to exploration- the first time they come into your home and start exploring every nook and cranny before settling in.

You get to live a healthier life. Studies have shown that pets can benefit human physical and psychological health.

You get an education in patience, nuturing, animal psychology and animal care and responsiblity.

In the eyes of a pet, you rank right up there with God. You are the hand that feeds them, walks them, loves them , grooms them and comes home to them. Don't think they don't know it :)

I've seen this before, but thanks for the reminder. I'd say I am getting off cheap for all they give to me. Youngest dd just gave me her preschool invitation to her mother's day tea. I told her I wouldn't miss it for the world. She wrapped her 5 year old arms around my neck, kissed me on the cheek and said "I love you, mommy." Absolutely Priceless.:D

Best of luck A&H mom on your future adoption plans. Please keep us posted.
