SARAH PALIN SAVED GOP FROM LANDSLIDE DEFEAT

By DICK MORRIS

Published on TheHill.com on November 11, 2008

As Richard Nixon wrote, "history is written by liberals," but the story of the 2008 campaign is too important to cede to them the analysis of what happened. A close analysis of the returns indicates several key realities:

a) Sarah Palin made a vast difference in McCain's favor. Compared to 2004, McCain lost 11 points among white men, according to the Fox News exit poll, but only four points among white women. Obama's underperformance among white women, evident throughout the fall, may be chalked up, in large part, to the influence of Sarah Palin. She provided a rallying point for women who saw their political agenda in terms larger than abortion. She addressed the question of what it is like to be a working mother in today's economy and society and resonated with tens of millions of white women who have not responded to the more traditional, and liberal, advocates for their gender.
b) Turnout did not increase substantially. Despite predictions (by me and others) of a vastly greater voter turnout, it didn't happen. About 127 million people voted in 2008, compared to 122 million in 2004. By contrast, turnout rose by almost 20 million between 2000 and 2004. The emphasis on early voting and the heavy participation in primaries indicated the likelihood of a huge increase in turnout, but, on Election Day, the turnout was modest.

c) The black vote made a huge difference; but young people did not. Obama, as expected, generated a big increase in African-American voter turnout. Fox News's exit polls estimate that blacks constituted 13 percent of the turnout in 2008, compared with 11 percent in 2004 and 10 percent in 2000. But voters under 30 years of age were still the same 11 percent of the vote that they were in 2004. The surge of young voters, which was supposed to animate Obama's rise, failed to happen.

d) The turnout efforts of groups like ACORN made a huge difference. Ultimately, it was the difference in voter turnout among Republicans and Democrats that, in addition to the higher black vote, elected Obama. According to Curtis Gans of American University, Republican turnout dropped from 30 percent in 2004 to 28.7 percent of the electorate in 2008, while the Democratic proportion of voters rose from 28.7 percent to 31.3 percent. Much of this increase came from newly registered voters, many as a result of ACORN's efforts. Voter registration rose by 6 million in 2008, which may have accounted for virtually all the increase in turnout.

The message for conservatives is clear: The focus of Democrats on grassroots activism, begun in 1998 by MoveOn.org, was crucial to the Obama election. Instead of relying on the Republican Party to carry the message to the electorate, conservatives must organize their own grassroots movements -- like GOPTrust.com -- and boost turnout and enthusiasm among those who share their worldview. The backbreaking tasks of registering voters and getting out the vote are key to winning elections in the post-media era. Online networking and building of cyber-roots organizations is the way to go in competing in the new politics we face today.

Will the Republican Party get its act together to compete? Who knows. Will conservatives take matters into their own hands and build the kind of organization and Internet base that the liberals have over the past 15 years? They better. Unless we want to witness a fundamental change in our laws, society and culture, conservatives had better get busy and emulate their leftist brethren in building organizations to tap into their base. In the '80s, groups like the National Rifle Association and the Moral Majority filled this need. Today, new groups must move to the fore to fill the void. And they better do it fast!

Welcome home Jacob! :cool1:

That is just really sad. Palin was a serious threat to the Obama campaign. That's whey they and the liberal media attacked her so hard and falsely. The OS was just gullible enough to buy their crap.

It is sad.

OMG!!!

Sorry if this has already been posted but I haven't had time to catch up on the thread.

Everyone really really really needs to listen to this youtube audio clip from Rahm Emanuel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfV8iXiB9Xg

 :faint:
Doesn't matter if take a train or are in barracks? That sounds creepy in of itself. Sounds like the old photos from WWII.

Exactly what is this 'civilian' security force going to do? This just stinks to high heaven folks. There was a woman talking about it on Bill Bennett this morning, she grew up under Fidel Castro and said it sounds EXACTLY like living under Castro was. She is very scared for our country now (and so am I).

Yup. Emanuel's book The Plan is quite eye opening. And a good example of why I disagree with those screaming at the top of their lungs "He's harmless!"

Personally, if this actually happens, I think the youth vote will go the way of the wind for the Democrats for quite a while. And frankly, I hope if this happens they wait until May of next year, aka when I turn 26 and thus would not be forced into what sounds suspiciously like indoctrination boot camp. Thanks but no thanks, already did that. It's called "attending a liberal arts college."

What will really be sad is - if we don't start to tell it like it is and make sure that people really know what the media is doing.

I am not talking about "getting in their faces" and not trying to convince the kool/ aid(to everyone) crowd but talking to people we know and saying over and over how the media has acted. They cannot be trusted - I my eyes it is fact. I don't trust what the media has to say. Even if it seems like good news for us I am skeptical.

They won't quit either. H will keep hammering relentlessly at Palin (via his media) because he sees her as a threat.

Palin is a threat. That's why they are still attacking her. Of course, they are guillible...they believe the "hope and change' routine is a good thing. Too bad, they didn't ask for specifics.

JACOB IS HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm exhausted. I only got about an hour of sleep last night at the hospital so I'm gonna go nap while he's asleep...only 1 1/2 hours till I gotta go feed him again.

I've been getting in all the snuggling that I missed the first 5 weeks of his life today. He's barely been out of my arms since yesterday :)

Oh--just thought I would add that I just love Sarah Palin even more after wathching her interviews on Greta's show Mon and Tues. I'm envious that she can manage 5 kids, being governor...and there were no dirty dishes in her sink...heck, her whole kitchen was spotless. Totally not fair, but I love her anyway.:rotfl:

That is the best news. Welcome home Jacob. You have an awesome Mom!:goodvibes
(He's home early, right? Wasn't it supposed to be at Thanksgiving time? Awesome!)

TMI?

Thank you! I have a lot of the WDW CDs they sell in the parks, but beyond that and the WDW ride/attraction/show music, I didn't even know where to start in their search engine. This helps bunches! :goodvibes

My DD 6 is already planning on moving to Canada " with or without us" due to some of the things she has heard from BO and DS 12 plans to write his congressman to protest the "mandatory" volunteering. He is a boy scout and already does a lot of volunteering, he said he just want to be the person who picks what he WANTS to do rather than being told what he HAS to do.

They are both POed beyond belief and they are children.

They see through the fancy words and posturing to the truth.

DH is ready to switch from independant to Republican. BO's choice of RE pushed him over the edge ( he despises him and his bullying ways).

I am becoming an American so I can make sure to vote next time.

Some good has come out of this election. Yes we may be stuck with BO for 4 years but I guarantee that if he keeps this up, he won't be around for 8.

Smart children. I think it's harder and harder these days for children to grow up conservative because of the nonsense going on in so many public schools. As someone whose line of employment is in the schools, it's disgusting to me that teachers run around telling their students who they voted for, let alone pushing their philosophies in class. "Well, the student asked." So what? You don't tell them, period. It just amazes me that most colleges don't hammer the point home that teachers and school employees are in a position of power over their students. Even saying who you're voting for is a no-no because they look to you as a person in power and thus can be influenced by you. My grad school hammered this home over and over again, and I find it pathetic that apparently most schools don't do this.

I saw one of these shirts - Obama with Mickey ears - last weekend at Disneyland. Ruined my "about to get on Peter Pans Ride" High. Really had to fight down the revulsion (is that a word?) or maybe it was bile??:confused3

I saw the thread that talked about someone seeing a shirt in WDW, I think it was, with the O logo and ears over it, and the big back and forth about how family t-shirts for WDW trips are copyright violations too. I think it's pretty obvious why Disney would and should have a problem with it. A shirt with the "O" logo and ears that looks like it's professionally made can make many people think Disney made the shirt and is endorsing Obama. Disney cares about their bottom line, period. Politics can get so nasty, and they know full well that their name attached with a candidate could cost them business. So, not only is it a copyright issue, it's one that could cost them business. Same deal if someone manipulated the GWB logo and made it look like a "real" Disney shirt. A family trip Disney homemade shirt is breaking copyright laws too, but others seeing it is not going to cost the company business. Ya know?

When you get some time, please read this article.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/791jsebl.asp

Personally, I have never read a P J O'Rourke article with such a negative tone, BUT he makes a compelling wake-up call for us conservatives.

Like I said,

No more Bi-partisan anything.

Interesting read, and good points. I always thought McCain seemed almost shocked when his old buddies in the media or on the left would attack him. "But... y'all were my friends! You liked me during the primaries, even!" Number one rule in politics IMO is never trust the opposition. Period. And for voters, the number one rule should be never trust any politician 100%, no matter how much you like them.

Just popping in for a moment but thought I would update:

JACOB IS HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY! I'm so glad things are going better, JB! Give the little one a hug from all of us here.

Jindal is on Greta right now.

I saw most of this. Sad that he defended Sarah more than her own running mate bothered to. :sad2: I like him very much.

My kids are 19, 17, 15, 12 and 10. It makes me very concerned about these kinds of ideas.

I may not have children, but I'm worried for everyone.

No child left behind???? Read the sign:

I was wondering what fast food place this was at, and I thought "I bet if it's anything like the ones around here, it's Burger King." Hello! In all my 25 years, not once has the BK in this area ever gotten my Whopper right on the rare occasions I order one.
