Critics Protest Promotion of ‘Seditious’ Islamic Finance

The shari'a-complaint banking sector has been growing rapidly in recent years. Charging that principles of Islamic law are being introduced in the United States by stealth, critics on Thursday will protest outside a U.S. Treasury Department seminar on shari’a-complaint finance.
Although this is not the department’s first “Islamic Finance 101” seminar, it comes amid a new push by Muslim figures in recent weeks to promote Islamic finance as a response to the debt-fueled global financial crisis.

Controversial Sunni scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a leading advocate of shari’a-complaint finance (SCF), told a conference in Qatar last month that Muslims should take the opportunity provided by the crisis to replace capitalism with an Islamic financial system.
“The collapse of the capitalist system, which is based on usury and securities rather than commodities in markets, shows us that it is undergoing a crisis and that our integrated Islamic philosophy – if properly understood and applied – can replace the Western capitalism,” he said.
At a subsequent economic forum in Saudi Arabia, the head of the Islamic Development Bank – an affiliate of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) – reiterated that the crisis offered an opportunity Islamic finance should seize.

“Global investment banks should be set up that realize the Islamic economy and offer the world a new vision and different way to manage assets, invest wealth and create products,” Islamic Development Bank President Ahmad Ali told the forum.

Saleh Kamel, head of the General Council of Islamic Banks, said Islam could be a “third way,” given what he called the failures of communism and capitalism.

On a visit to Saudi Arabia coinciding with the forum, Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt was quoted as saying the U.S. government was examining features of Islamic banking to see the extent to which it may be useful in tackling the crisis....

Well, comrades, I have hit the ignore button many times in the past 48 hours. You know, if you don't want them around..........BE GONE! :wizard:

There, I feel better. Now, what were we talking about? :goodvibes

I was thinking the same thing about the stocks. I called my dad and asked him if someone forgot to tell Wall Street that "that one" was going to save us all and make us proper... I'm now at least hoping to get my mortgage and gas paid. :rotfl2:

I said it on the last thread and I'll say it onthis thread:

Who actually thought that the stock market would go up with Obama being announced as president elect? :confused3 The main players in the stock market are the ones that will be punished under an Obama presidency. Why would they feel safe and secure after his win?

But, yeah, about that gas thing.. I had to fill up this morning. Will Obama reimburse me? Will he give me a pre-paid visa card so that I can keep it off my taxes like he did with his campaign workers? Will he pay me back the full amount or just some of the amount like he did with his campaign workers?

This is totally way off topic BUT it has been a few years since I went through the Anchorage airport. The new terminal is wonderful and it takes FOREVER to get through it. I was so happy to see the bear is still in the display case. :thumbsup2

Oh my goodness...I spend so much time at the airport. Not going places, mind you. But my DH flew out of there for work, and my oldest DS worked there last year, and my other son flies all the time for sports...

Yep...there are bears there...big ones!...in the display cases, and wolves, and an albino beaver...

It's now named the Ted Stevens airport. You gotta' love Alaska...:thumbsup2

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the kool-aid drinkers.

ya know, I'm just not even going near the Community Board at large. I come to this thread straight through the links in my email notifications and catch up from there. I stick here and my cruise board thread and that's it.

If some brave soul would let me know when its safe to come out, I'd appreciate it.

Hey, you all moved! Do you still need me to bring some lasagna?

I work with a guy who actually believes he has our best interests at heart and will put us above himself. I don't get it...

Our next trip to WDW isn't until Spring Break -2nd week of March.......it seems so far off......

DW has family coming from Europe for Christmas this year....but they all want to go to Vegas......yeah Vegas.......there is precious little Mickey in Vegas.....I tried to tell them.......they seem to like that whole drunken, bright light throw money away vacation type thing.

Oh well.........

I'm going to Vegas for Christmas. Ugh. My mom lives there (she moved there when she retired) although we don't go downtown. I'd so much rather be up here in the snow, etc...but she's having the whole family come there...and she paid for it! :rotfl2:

Where in the heck is the albino beaver? I've just seen the bear. :confused3

Hi all, just checking in (been sneaking around packing) and you've already got 12 pgs. I'm going to miss a lot while we're gone (haven't decided if we're taking the laptop yet) we leave tomorrow morning and will be at WDW by about 4 p.m., it's a long flight. So anyhow, I've managed to get everyone packed and nobody noticed, got the dog to the kennel (I told the kids she needed to get her microchip adjusted), and now I'm just waiting for them to fall asleep so I can finish packing. We'll surprise them in the morning, I can't wait!

Tina

Oh, you're going to have so much fun! I can't wait to hear all about it.
