The Chanukah Thread

So I'm not the only Jewish kid who grew up figuring out how many movies we could see in one day?

:rotfl2: we are going to see Kong, and Fun with Dick and Jane today... we need to be home early to light the menorah and to watch the Bears beat Green Bay..

Even though we celebrate Christmas we go to the movies on Christmas Day.

OK, I'm convinced now---you all were really meant to be Jewish! :teeth:

Movies on Christmas Day has always been a tradition in my family, but in a county that is one-third Jewish, it's not always a good thing. We saw Memoirs Of A Geisha today and the theater was as crowded as I've ever seen it.

I went last night for cheaper by the dozen 2 and there were 6 ppl in the theatre.

It's a long thread, but gives insight to Fords Family views.

I see what you mean

Cheryl - I guess it all depends on where you live. When we used to live in upstate NY, we would also have the theater to ourselves. One Christmas was spent in HH and we had our own private showing. It was so cool, because if you've ever beem to HH, this movie theater is small to begin with, so being the only ones in the audience was like having a private screening room.

I went to see The Producers yesterday. I chose a theater in the suburbs that has the most Jews and it was fairly full. People were laughing a lot and applauded at the end. It was a lot of fun.

I'm not a huge Matthew Broderick fan, but after the responses to my thread about the grocery store got me upset, I figured the best movie to see would be the one making fun of Hitler. It was essentially a stage musical put on screen, rather than a movie-ized version of the musical. (yes, I am aware of the original movie) It was much better than I thought and I understand why it was such a hit on Broadway with the original stars (I saw the national tour and it was funny, but not amazing).

We went to see The Family Stone - with all the other Jewish families in our town. It was funny to run into so many people from temple. We went home afterwards to light the candles and eat our traditional brisket/latke dinner - although we were a bit bad and made the latkes right from the boxed mix v.s from scratch.

What other thread?

I blew off the ghetto comment as a UKism. But after that and the earlier joke that was so stereotypical, I'm not so sure.

I'm sorry if the joke offended you--I really meant it in the most lighthearted way possible. I was raised in a half-Jewish household myself, and I got a chuckle out of it. I do now realize, however, that people could have found it insulting. I'll remove it. :guilty:

On a complete;y different topic, I added beer to our usual brisket recipe ( we do ours in BBQ sauce)--WOW!! It was delicious...

We now have leftover brisket for sandwiches to last us all week.

Darn, I hate it when I don't remember a joke that someone made and then it's removed before I can reread it! Please refresh my memory via PM and I will take it in the spirit that you meant it.

Happy Hanukkah All!!

For the record, I celebrate both, being of Catholic and Jewish heritage.

I still have some Jewish relatives who look down on me for having a Xmas tree though :( Unlike them, I don't see why I have to pick one faith over the other. I choose to embrace both, after all, Jesus was a Jew :)

I don't know how I've missed this thread. I just read JennyMominRI's post on the Jewish Ghetto in Venice. We just lit our Hanukkah candle tonight. Our beautiful menorah was bought in the Jewish Ghetto in Venice. It was one of the most memorable things about our trip to Italy years ago and every time we use it, it serves as a reminder of what others of our faith have endured through the generations. It's very meaningful to my DH and I and I hope to pass it down to my DD.

Happy Hanukkah everyone!
