The cake that wasn't meant to be...

DH volunteered me to decorate a cake for the Cub Scout's Blue and Gold banquet today. Now, I just graduated from nursing school, take the state boards in less than a week, and just started training on my super busy ICU stepdown floor as a RN. I've been a tad bit stressed.:tilt:

Not to mention, I dabbled a long time ago making cutesy baby cakes for my kid's birthday parties. I am by no means an expert, and don't really want anyone that I'm not related to see my attempts. I love that he thinks I'm a great artist...but really, I'm not.

So, against my will I spend $60 yesterday on all the equipment I needed to make a big sheet cake for today (gave my decorating stuff away long ago). Money that I could have spent to buy a beautiful cake.

So I bake a lemon chiffon cake, frost it and stick it in the box to finish the decorating today. DH is getting kids ready for church this morning and I step away from the now uncovered cake to help DD with her tights...

Come back to see that one of the cats really, really likes lemon buttercream frosting.:headache: No time to special order the cake I wanted to order to begin with, and certainly no time to make another cake and get it done here now.

Off I go to Costco for one of their standard cakes in the cooler!!

lol I knew it had to be an animal...
I made all the cakes for my 4 brother's weddings. Of course the last one was the memory.
I baked the cake on Friday and left it on the dining room table while I went to the rehersal dinner. I was going to frost it that night and decorate it in the morning since the wedding was in the evening.
I had left the dog in the kitchen with the swinging door shut. I had trouble pushing the door so I never thought the dog would be able to open it.
I came home from the dinner and saw that the dog had eaten the bottom tier of the cake, the 16" round, and not just one, both of them.
Luckily the grocery store was open late because I was up all night re making the cake.
It was tomato soup spice cake with raisins dates and nuts, very moist but heavy enough for the weight of the other tiers.

One year I had made a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for one of my kids birthdays. My dog jumped up on the counter and helped herself to the corner of the cake! I cut off the part she bit off, filled it in with frosting and nobody was the wiser. No time to make another and no time to go buy one. :rotfl:

I was so tempted to do that! I was just worried that my kids would tell everyone there that the cat was nibbling on a corner.:rotfl:

Sorry to hear that happened, especially after all your hard work and expense.

If my dh had volunteered me without my permission and I didn't have the necessary supplies, rather than spend $60 on supplies, I would have ordered the COSTCO cake to begin with.:thumbsup2

Enjoy the banquet!

Yep. For my b'day party one year, my mom made me her awesome chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and set it out on the cake platter on the sideboard. Went back to doing whatever, and noticed this weird scraping noise. Went in..our Alaskan malamute had his front paws up on the sideboard and was, ever so carefully, slowly licking off all the frosting. The noise was from the platter turning.

She had NO time to make a new cake, and was NOT a store-bought cake person, and he'd been so very careful...she whipped up a new batch of frosting and made it beautiful and never told a soul (that wasn't there, that is).

I was under pain of death (and severe embarrassment) to not tell my friends about it! And I even ate the cake!

DH always teases me that I'm a terrible cook (I am) and a couple of years ago I decided to make him a really fancy dinner to show him I really can cook. I made a roast chicken with sweet potatoes and roast carrots with gravy. I pulled the chicken out of the oven and let it sit for 15 minutes (per the instructions) - came back to find the cat with his head IN the chicken!!! He came out all covered in gravy!!! I didn't want DH to tease me again that I'd ruined another dinner...so I carved the chicken, covered it in gravy and served it! DH said it was wonderful!!!

I know they say in a marriage there should be no secrets...but I don't think he needs to know this!

I say you Earn a PRIZE, priceless!
My dad walked in with one of those honey hams and placed it on my counter. Next thing we knew my dog decided that he would like some, I had never seen him get on that counter before, have to say we laughed so hard......we wound up not serving it since we had so much other stuff but animals...ya gotta love em...
