The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

If you don't mind touristy and like BBQ, Virgil's is a favorite spot of mine. The BBQ nachos are sooooo good!

What kind of food do you like?

Thank you BrdwayBoy and ctinct for all the help! Off to check out the links...

One more question...I know this is very subjective but can you recommend some places to eat pre-show? I don't mind touristy it just has to be good!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

A really good pizza place we've gone a couple of times is Don Antonio. I think it's around 50th and 10th, if I'm remembering correctly. Delicious pizzas (I've never tried anything else there) and not touristy. It can get crowded and a bit loud, but it is Times Square after all. ;)

We're pretty much foodies so we're open to just about anything. And since it's NYC and the options are so varied I prefer to stay away from chain restaurants. I think I've eaten at Virgil's but I'll check it out. Thanks!!

Ahh. Times Square. I have such a love-hate relationship with it. We definitely like pizza so I'll check out this place too. Thanks for the suggestion!

I saw Tuck Everlasting last night!

It was pretty good. The dancing was extraordinary and the set was just gorgeous. The book and music were just okay, there was only one part that really bugged me. Spoiler alert (highlight text to read or just scroll on by) : I feel like they should have cut out the part where the 102-year-old-posing-as-a-17-year-old Jesse tells the 11-year-old Winnie to wait 6 years and then drink the water so that they could get married? When I read the book I was just kind of like "eh" but seeing it on stage with AKB and Sarah was really... ew. I know there's not a lot that can be done about an adaptation of a book, especially a classic like Tuck, but anyone like me who has been following it since AKB left Newsies to do this show back in 2013 knows that they had 3 years to figure out a way to deal with the scene and it was still so uncomfortable.

Anyway. I liked that it was a fairly simple, old-school show, but I don't know if it has the potential to last for more than a year or two. The mezz was completely empty and it made me kind of sad.

This is going to sound super materialistic and off-topic, but the Tuck merchandise was PERFECT and stole my heart. I bought a shirt and a bracelet, but I would have bought more if I had the money to! The bracelet is Alex and Ani style with a little toad charm. They also had this necklace I really wanted, it was a vial of blue water like the enchanted spring. They also had two different styles of journals and a bunch of buttons.

And of course I stole a photo with LOML. Always a pleasure seeing this lovely boy.

The Blue Fin restaurant inside the W hotel is very good, especially for fish or sushi-related. Not inexpensive, but great and draws lots of pre-Broadway traffic.

Just got my ticket for "American Psycho" in a few weeks - really looking forward to this show!

This may be random, but I was wondering if anyone on this thread would be up for maybe putting together/attending a Broadway Dis meet? Meet in NYC and have dinner and then see a show? Just a thought...

I know for me, I would love to meet other people to go to shows with! I typically end up going alone because no one ever wants to spend the money or commit to a date.

Saw shuffle along last night and really enjoyed it.

I think they could have cut about 15 minutes form the show as the 2nd act seemed to drag for me. But overall I really enjoyed it!

I loved the train scene!

The way it was handled, I totally felt sad for Jesse - it took him 102 years to find someone to connect with and when he finally did, she was a minor. I can see where on the surface it'd be creepy, but I personally wasn't creeped - probably because he didn't do/say anything except basically "I can wait."

Yay! Let's try and get something started. Who's in?

I loved the train scene!

That train scene! Gahhh!!! I'm ready to go back just to see that!

Today was trip #2 to ROBBER BRIDEGROOM. I took my best friend... It's still a bunch of fun. Leslie is still a riot and Steven had some fun new vocals in "Steal with Style."

TONY nominations announced on Tuesday morning!

FIVE MINUTES TIL TONY NOMS. My last ditch predictions about Hamilton is that it will be nominated for book, score, choreography, musical, direction, orchestrations, costume design, set design, lighting and in acting categories: chris jackson, phillipa soo, daveed diggs, lin miranda, renee goldsberry, and leslie odom jr!

So 15 nominations. It won't win all those acting categories, but it will be nominated I think.

It's starting!!! I'm so invested this year because I had the good fortune to see a lot. I can't wait!

I'm pretty pleased. I personally didn't love Bright Star, but I did think Carmen Cusack's performance was absolutely worth a nomination. Poor American Psycho and Tuck Everlasting...

I'm upset about American Psycho. I really was pulling for Ben Walker.

I didn't (and won't) see it, but I have only heard glowing things about his performance. Who would you bump from the category in order to include him? (I haven't seen School of Rock or Fiddler yet--though I have tickets to--and I won't get to see She Loves Me, so I only have the Hamilton men to go on.)

You pretty well nailed it, except Jonathan Groff. Sixteen nominations. Wow. Well deserved, for certain.

Only shocker I saw was Jennifer Hudson not getting the nomination. Besides that everything was with in the realm of my expectations.

I do think American Psycho will be closing soon. They didn't even have good reviews to pull sound bites from to help them along. At least Tuck can continue to market itself as a family friendly night of entertainment and has some good reviews to back it for a little bit. I say Tuck makes it through the summer and American Psycho less than that.

In all honesty, I didn't think Jennifer Hudson deserved a nomination. She did a lovely job as Shug (better than I expected, for sure) but I was wowed by Danielle Brooks. And even the woman who played Nettie (I forget her name just now...) impressed me more. I think featured actress was just LOADED with talent this year.

I honestly wish I traveled with company who would/could see American Psycho with me so I could make my own decision, but that's not in the cards. I am seeing Tuck next Friday, though. :)

Oh it wasn't about deserve or not. It was just her celebrity status that I thought would get her the nom. (not to say I thought she was bad just that they would push her higher up the list).

It will be interesting to see how the multiple acting noms for Hamilton split the vote.

No worries. I understood what you meant, and I agree. I was just glad that her celebrity status didn't carry her beyond her actual performance. And again, I really liked her. I just felt others performed better. I'm pretty excited for the Tonys now. :)
