The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I really like Broadway shows and so do my parents. My Mom grew up with Andy Karl(not his real last name)who played Rocky Balboa in Rocky on Broadway. He has also had parts in Jersey Boys and Wicked and many other shows. My favorite shows I have seen on Broadway Aladdin, Wicked, and Rocky.

Dd saw Curious Incident on the West End while studying in London. She really enjoyed it. Of course, she'll always remember it because a few days later the roof caved in at the Old Vic, right where she was sitting!

My family and I did a whirlwind Broadway weekend recently and saw 3 shows in 36 hours. My dh had knee replacement surgery in December so we splurged and stayed at the Marriott Marquis in Time Square so he wouldn't have to do much walking. Started our marathon by seeing It's Only a Play with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. This is the show my husband wanted to see since he loves Nathan Lane, and he was wonderful. As JenM said up thread he sure is a showman! Then that evening we saw the show my daughter wanted to see -- Finding Neverland. She had seen it in Boston with Jeremy Jordan in the role that Matt Morrison is playing and wanted to see the difference. This ended up being the show I liked the best -- just wonderful music and a great story -- had to clap at the end to show I believe :-).

On the following day, we ended our marathon by seeing Something Rotten. If you are at all a Broadway buff you will laugh your head off. There are so many references to other musicals it was hard to keep up with them. My husband says he wants to see it again just to see what else he might pick up. All three of us are huge Spamalot fans so we thuroughly enjoyed this one.

The next time we will be in the city it will be a belated Mother's Day gift from my daughter to me, and right now the plan is to just go to the TKTS booth and see what we can get. DD is going in at the end of June to see Hedwig with friends 'cause she is a huge Darren Criss fan.

We have narrowed our choice down to Something Rotten and Finding Neverland. We are taking 2 teens. Which would be best for us?

Just wanted to say that I finally saw Gigi last week! There's a full review in my PTR, but in short: it was FANTASTIC! I loved little Vanessa and Corey. They were both wonderful. It was a spur-of-the-moment birthday treat and thanks to TodayTix, we got 3rd row seats at a great price. In fact, I bought a sweatshirt that was more money than the ticket :rotfl: JK! But up next I'm trying to see Something Rotten, Neverland, or Hedwig (with Darren).

I don't have anything to compare them to, except from the originals Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth from the CD. Jackie and Chandra were really good I thought.

I heard they were good as well. I've only seen Caroline Bowman as Elphie and Kara Lindsay as Glinda.

Welcome to the DIS!

They were very good! Kara especially- she's very cute and bubbly, perfect for the role! Plus, I loved her work in Newsies, so I was already expecting only the best from her :goodvibes
Glinda definitely has to be cute and bubbly. I see by your username that you must really like Newsies.

Glad you enjoyed Gigi! I still think Corey Cott is entirely too young for the role of Gaston, but he did a wonderful job.

We see Amazing Grace, with Josh Young, in July and This Saturday Ever After at the Paper Mill. Looking forward to seeing James Synder again. Hoping to see Sonething Rotten before DD leaves for her internship at WDW!

How versed are they with Shakespeare? We havent seen it yet, but think Spamalot and fast moving British humor. If the teens are young, they might enjoy the backstory of Peter Pan's author instead. We are huge Jeremy Jordan supporters, so we won't see Finding Neverland on Broadway. Dd flew to Bosyon to see Jeremy :-)

I was wondering the same thing about Corey as well, why did they choose such a young guy for Gaston when he's supposed to be so much older than Gigi? Then I saw some interviews with the creative team, and it turns out they made a lot of choices to make "Gigi" appeal to today's crowd. They thought having a younger man play Gaston and having the aunt and grandma sing "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" as opposed to Gaston's uncle made things "less creepy" (their words). So I guess he was perfect for what the director was going for in this production, but yeah, it was very different from the movie and other past productions.

Tell us how Amazing Grace is! It's in the same theater as Newsies was and I was shocked when I saw how quickly the marquee had gone up... and I have to wait until June 21st to see Ever After!!! I'm sitting on pins and needles, I want to see it so badly!!!

Okay I am almost too embarrassed to tell this story because it shows my lameness. I too love Andy Karl (what a rich, velvety voice!!). Saw closing night of Rocky. I could not stop gushing when he came through the stage door lineup. I told him I had loved him as Joe. He said "Ah yes... 9 To 5." I then proceeded to tell him (and this is the lame part) that I had played Violet in 9 To 5 and he started singing Let Love Grow to me (the love duet that Joe and Violet sing at the end of the show.) Of course I started singing too. Thought I would melt. That's one of my fave broadway memories. It was just my 15 year old daughter and I there that night and she just looked at me and said "OH MOM!!!" But in a "thrilled for me" way... not the "OMG you embarrassed me" way. She know how much it meant. LOL
