WDW Trip Report (July 5 July 19, 2002)
Participants: Myself, Wife, Son (8), Daughter (10), Mom & Dad (Both Over 60), My Wifes Sister and Husband and their Son (8) and Daughter (10), My Wifes Mom & Dad (Both Over 60), My Wifes Brother and Wife and their two Sons (4 & 6).
Day 1 - Friday Morning, July 5.
My wife and I wake up around 4:30 AM and get the kids up. Its raining outside again (we live in San Antonio, and have had over 35 of rain in the past week). We finish packing the Expedition in the garage and head over to my parents around 5:15 AM. Once at my parents we have to unload the back of the Expedition and then put the Luggage Carrier on the roof (in a downpour no less). This is only the 2nd time Ive put the Carrier on and I think I have it right only to discover I forgot to put some of the spacers on. Undo everything and start over. Now I can find one of the bolts and a hurried search ensues. Keep in mind all of this is happening in a downpour and in the dark. Finally around 6:20 the Carrier is securely attached and the luggage is stowed. Now my Dad and I have to change clothes since we are soaked to the bone. Fortunately we both were wearing Sandals, so we arent stuck with wet shoes to start the trip. Were finally in the Truck and heading out of town when about 2 miles from the house my Dad realizes he left his glasses on the dresser. So, we take the next turnaround and head back to house. Short wait while Dad runs upstairs and fetches the glasses. Well were off again, time is now 6:45 AM. So much for the 6:00 AM start we had planned for. By now the kids are fully awake and want something to eat for breakfast, so we make pull into the Taco Cabana drive through for breakfast tacos. Its now 7:00 AM and we are almost out of town. Its still raining Cats & Dogs and Im worried that we may not be able to pass over the I-10 bridge in Seguin since the Guadalupe River has been flooded for several days and Canyon Lake went over the spillway late last night. I checked the TX Dept Of Trans on the Internet before leaving our house, and the road was still open, so fingers are crossed and hoping for the best. We finally make it to Seguin around 7:30 and there is still several feet to spare, so it looks like smooth sailing from here on out. We finally make it out of the rain about 90 miles outside of San Antonio and the rest of the days trip is uneventful. We make it to Louisiana border by lunch time and pull into the Welcome Center and have sandwiches. Luck would have it that the kids get to see their first Alligator in the wild right in the swamp by the Picnic Area. There is a sign that has no swimming and a picture of an Alligator near by. Couldnt pass up that photo op, so had the kids stand in front of the sign with the Alligator in the background. We make it to our first nights destination, Baton Rouge, LA and pull into the Fairfield Inn a little after 3:30 PM. Not too bad, 470 miles in under 9 Hours including several potty stops and a lunch break. We get checked in and head straight to the pool. We had dinner around 7:30 PM at On The Boarder and are back at the hotel by 9:30 PM. We just get settled in and the kids are sound asleep when the phone rings, its my wifes family, they decided to drive from Abilene, TX to Baton Rouge, LA so that they could travel the rest of the way with us. This was an unexpected surprise since we hadnt planned on meeting up with them until at least Tallahassee or Orlando. Vikis brother and family headed out from Abilene the day before since they were going to the Pepsi Cola 400 in Daytona on Saturday. So its 1:00 AM before we are finally back in bed with a 6:00 AM wake-up call pending, oh well, so much for a restful vacation.
