The "big drop" sensation: what does it feel like to you?

Just a thought - atp may be thinking of the DL Pirates? Where the drop is MUCH longer and almost as bad as Splash? But yes - Splash is MUCH worse than pirates at WDW. Not only is there the huge drop at the end there are a couple drops inside that feel worse than Pirates.

That said - even if you hate drops it is worth riding once to see the inside. It is a beautiful ride. (Hey- I've even ridden 3 times in the past almost 20 years it has been open! :lmao:) I would plan to ride at the end of the night or before you head out for a break.

Oh no! We are taking our first trip to Disney Land next summer. Pirates is my favorite ride so I have to go on it. Now I am freaked out. :scared1:

I did not know that! I will be trying RnR for the first time in August. Thanks for letting me know!

I was going to try RnR but my DH who rides EVERYTHING said it makes him feel sick and he doesn't want to ride. He will ride the HUGE coasters at Universal.. so that made me think twice. I'm still trying Space, though! And EE is now on the list of things I will ride.

I'm going to have to stop calling myself a chicken pretty soon!! :rotfl:

It is worst than pirates by far. I seriously could not walk, talk or even comprehend what was going on aroung me for a few seconds after it and tears just started streaming down my face. I got myself together afterwards but it was rough. I have been on many roller coasters when I was younger and had something to prove but nothing ever made me feel like Splash did.

Oh wow. I don't think I'll be trying it anytime soon then!! I wish I didn't care though. I really wish I could go on all the rides.

No, I'm talking about WDW! I'm a drop chicken! :rotfl:
If the DL version is much worse, and has all those drops, then maybe I should stay away from it if I ever go there. It sounds as bad as Splash from your description!

I LOVE the sensation of freefall. I can describe it as feeling.. nothing. Once gravity comes back into play, you felt like you were just flying during the big drop.
Maybe it's that sensation that your body can't handle?

Better than when I went - I had no idea!!! Let me tell you not being prepared doesn't help at all. The drop is just as long as Splash but not as steep. I am planning on trying it again in October - but this is the year of beating my fears! :cheer2:

That's so funny that you love hiccups.... don't think I've heard of anyone like that before! Thanks for your input... I think it all boils down to different people have different types of feelings when going down a drop. Reminds me of the love/hate cilantro debate.

Lol yeah I've never met anyone else who loves the hiccups either. So funny how differently people tolerate different things!! :goodvibes

Same with me!! I LOVE the feeling of drops, like on Splash Mt. and Tower of terror. It tickles my tummy and like you said, I feel weightless and it just makes me laugh and smile.
But on the contrary, I HATE roller coasters because I get motion sickness from them, so no longer can I ride things like Space Mountain. So, everyone reacts differently.

That's no fun that you get motion sickness! Luckily, I don't, but roller coasters just don't do it for me. I always somehow go with roller coaster junkies and they are always so baffled that I love ToT WAY WAY WAY more then RnRC! Maybe if it had some drops!! :rotfl:

That's a GREAT definition of it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that feeling. It's why I'm going to ride ToT EVERY SINGLE DAY my next vacay! (9 days!!) Can't wait to feel that again!

Interesting - I wonder how much worse the extra steepness (is that a word?) makes it feel. Has anyone who dislikes the drop sensation been on both the DL Pirates and Splash who can compare the intensity of the two? I've been on Pirates at DL and while I didn't love the drop, it wasn't too bad and I would do it again.

I love the feeling. I like when my body comes out of the seat. TT can never drop to much for me. I have to ride alone lots of times though DH does not like it and only rides when he looses a bet. The only ride that has ever made me sick and (I will ride anything) is Mission to Space. Rip Rocket at universal is awsome. DH had a look of horror the whole time.:rotfl:

The kids and I rode Pirates at DL 4 years ago over and over again, and I don't remember there being a drop AT all. Not even one. Maybe they have redone it since then? I am almost positive there wasn't one when we rode it.

Thank God for people just like ME!!!

Ok...

1) My explanation of "the feeling." For me, it's not the stomach, it's the head.I feel an incredible tightness in my head and face. my jaw bone and back teeth feel like they're being crushed, and I feel like my skull is being pressed firmly from all sides- the longer the drop, the closer I get to feeling like my head will explode! My sinuses feel like they are oozing out my eye sockets.

2) I LOVE simulator rides. (Dinosaur, Harry Potter, etc...)

3) The rides I've been on, and how I feel about them:

Space Mountain- none of the drops bother me, but I won't stand in line to ride it

Splash Mountain- never again. read explanation #1. :rotfl2:

Big Thunder- :love::love::love:

Pirates- doesn't bother me at all. I like it. "Cool and refreshing burst of air" helps.

Maelstrom- maybe someday, I'm still too scared.

Rockin' Roller Coaster- The initial take off is the worst. It's the reason I wouldn't ride it again- it's not just the speed- there's a little "baloooop and diiip" to it- it's not a drop- it's like a speed bump combined with a pot hole at 80mph. Other than the 2-second entrance, I loved the ride. It's a shame I can't do the start-up ever again. I really can't. My head will pop.

But Maelstrom is nothing compared to Pirates. If you can't feel the drop on Pirates, you certainly won't the one on Maelstrom. Unless of course you don't ride it for another reason.

Oh that's good to know. Ok, I'll ride that one next time I have the chance. thanks! :goodvibes

The worst part of my drop-phobia is when I see all these really young kids on the ride, or demanding to go on the ride, at which point my friend will say "calling you a baby is inappropriate, because babies will ride this and you still won't!"
I got off space mountain, after screaming my brains out because I can't even see if there's a drop, and a boy who was most likely not even 10 said, "who was that girl who kept screaming? It wasn't even a scary ride!"

DS5 says "That made my p*$#s feel funny!"

OMG - that's so funny because when my DS was 8, to get him to go on a ride, I told him that the drop feeling is kinda like what your tummy feels like when you're in love for the first time. Whoa!!! :rotfl:

Maelstrom is nothing, give it a try. The trolls are scarier than anything.

I feel the same about the take off on RnRc but I can handle it because I loooovvee the ride. The more you ride it the more you can used to it.

For some reason on this last trip the backwards part on EE made me feel al little weird almost what you described in the first part of your post. The head presure and the muscles tightening up. This had never happened on my previous trip but it wasn't so bad I wouldn't do it again.

No, I'm almost positive the drops have always been there. And I am absolutely positive they were there 4 years ago because that's when I was there too. There are two drops in fact: the first being the big one, and the second being more in line with the WDW version. :)

I love splash mountain but am afraid to ride space mountain (although in ever rode it). I want to ride EE because I read the drop is not as bad as splash mountain. I am afraid of the drop at ToT. The drops make me feel my ribs are being pulverized

I love the big drop sensation I get in my stomach. As others have said, it sort of "tickles" my stomach. The bigger the drop, the better. I also get that sensation during the take off at Rock n Roller Coaster, which is the main reason I ride it, lol. The backwards part on EE is a little disorienting and lasts just a bit longer than I would like, but I still love that ride. That being said, I do not do well with simulators or rides that spin. I used to hate Star Tours (probably won't like the new one either), and you won't get me near Mission Space. I did the wimpy version and had to struggle to keep my breakfast down. And when we get on the tea cups, we're usually the only cup not spinning, because I refuse to let DS touch the silver wheel. He hates riding the tea cups with me. :rotfl:
