Hi!

We are currently planning our 2017 cruise (yes, i plan a long time in advance) and we are planning to go to Atlantis. We are doing it through DCL (not by ourselves). I doubt that we are going to use the waterslides but we are interested in all the exhibits, lazy rivers, pools and beaches.

I would like to hear your tips for the day:

What are the best place to eat with the DCL vouchers?

What are the best beaches? (Which beaches are we allowed to use?)

What are the best attractions?

What to avoid?

Any single detail or recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: AFTER REALIZING HOW MANY CRUISESHIPS (FIVE!!!) WILL BE ON PORT THAT DAY, MY FAMILY CHOSE TO CANCEL ALL EXCURSION PLANS AND ENJOY THE CRUISESHIP! BUT THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTIONS AND REVIEWS. COULD BE HELPFUL FOR SOME OTHER TIME.

The waterslides are really the primary attractions of Aquaventure, and it's worth trying at least the ones in the Power Tower, which are really more like water coasters. If you're not a fan of coasters, these are really not too bad; my wife doesn't like roller coasters but she liked the Power Tower slides fine. There's basically one big drop near the beginning followed by a hump (with water jets to push you over the hump), and then they become fairly normal tube slides. The body slides, OTOH, are pretty steep and scary.

Besides waterslides, there are some pools and the Current, which is a "rapid river". The Current is a bit lazy in sections, but in other sections it gets very rapid and shoots you past concrete boulders that could really hurt you if you're not paying attention. My older son got a pretty bad scrape on his leg when a wave knocked him off his float and scraped him against the concrete wall. I think if you keep your wits about you it's fine, just don't go thinking it's a "lazy" river and veg out or you may be in for a rude awakening.

Over by the Beach Tower there's another pool and an actual lazy river, but we didn't get over there. The Beach Tower is under construction right now and I think that lazy river is closed, but it will probably be re-opened by the time you cruise.

What are the best place to eat with the DCL vouchers?

I believe the vouchers are only good at the food stands, which have very limited food. There are some wrap sandwiches, burgers, very generic pizza and not much else. We ate at a sit-down outdoor restaurant called Shark Bites that was pretty good, but I doubt the vouchers are good there. If they are, I'd eat there, as the selection is much better and you get table service. You might have to pay a supplement for that.

What are the best pools?

They all seemed very similar, except for decor. The Royal Baths pool is just a big pool with a pretty design on the bottom. The others have some decorative pillars, or a waterfall coming in, or something else that made them stand out visually. From an enjoyment perspective, they're all about the same.

What are the best beaches?

All the beaches have nice white sand and plenty of lounge chairs and whatnot. The Paradise Lagoon beach has almost no surf, which is good for letting kids play in the water. The beach over by the Beach Tower is effectively an extension of Cabbage Beach, which has some very rough surf. The Cove beach, or at least the part of it near the Hospitality Center, looked nice and the surf didn't look too bad.

What are the best attractions?

What do you like? The Dig is very nice, but we took a nice slow stroll through it in about 30 minutes and felt like we'd seen it. There are also the predator lagoons, which we didn't get to, but there's an underwater glass tube you can walk through and watch the sharks. The lobby of the Royal Tower was pretty neat; the artwork around the edge of the dome in the lobby looks like an ancient fresco that tells the story of Atlantis. The overall theming of Atlantis is very well done; almost Disney caliber. You can tell they thought through what Atlantis might have been like, what their iconography would be and their architecture. It's neat.

Where could I find a map of the site?

What to avoid?

I wouldn't recommend taking the guided tour of the Dig in the morning. It's just wasting time you could spend in the water park while the lines are short. But then again, if you don't care about the waterslides, then the tour might be a good thing. The tour guides we overheard as we walked through the Dig didn't seem to be adding much value, but probably it varies from guide to guide and also depends on what they're describing. I guess you might want to play it by ear. Go on the tour and if it's not great, just head to the water park.

Ultimately, prepare for a large, confusing place. I recommend heading immediately over to the Hospitality Center. It has the lockers and changing rooms (bring a credit card to pay for them), towel distribution, and is near the beach, the Current, and a large number of lounge chairs. It's near the back of the park, so it doesn't necessarily fill up right away. You can get your bearings, change if needed, get towels, etc. Study the map in advance so you know where things are, though I can tell you that on the ground it feels pretty disorienting.

Have a great trip!

The problem is that we are going to be with my in laws that are over 65 aka not really in shape to use the waterslides. I'm usually not a fan of them... My husband is more than I am. But we love nice pools and lazy/rapid rivers.

Thanks for your review. I'm taking notes. :)

I realize that some beaches and pools are only allowed to be used by guests staying at the hotel.

Which beaches and pools are we allowed to use?

Also, how do you know how many cruiseships will dock that day?

Hello again! Still hoping to get some more reviews if anybody is interested.

One more question: I don't swim very well, I usually wear a safety vest in lazy rivers... Are there any vests available for adults? Are they free?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure I can answer your specific questions, as we took this tour 4 years ago. If you have always wanted to visit Atlantis, it is a good way to get there and see what its all about. That said, overall, it wasn't worth the money. We had always wanted to see Atlantis, so I am glad we went, but I can't imagine that we'd ever go there again. Maybe that's because we live near the beach, visit Hawaii and have been to many large aquariums and water parks....idk.

We had a dangerous driver from the port to Atlantis. This was the hired driver by DCL. He was cursing and driving like a bat outta hell. The employees at Atlantis had no customer service skills whatsoever. We had a walk through of the casino, a brief Atlantis overview and then we went to get our wrist bands. We were on our own after that. We LOVED the lazy river. It takes a long time to go through that whole thing. We didn't do the other water slides or basic pools. We spent most our time on the lazy river. We did walk down to a beach where they were checking wrist bands. The beach was nothing special, but as I mentioned, we live near the beach and we vacation in Hawaii, so we are used to great beaches.

There were a few places listed as where we could get our lunch that was paid for with our tour. We went to one and had greasy chicken, a bag of chips and a can of soda. It was what I'd consider a very cheap junk lunch and had I known that beforehand, I would have paid for lunch in one of the restaurants instead. We walked through the aquarium and it was nice, but wasn't amazing to us. I think we would have been more impressed if we hadn't been through other big aquariums so many times before.

We we left and got on our bus back, the driver yelled at us to get off the bus and I asked if we were on the right bus to get back to the Disney ship and he said yes to go have a seat. He wasn't apologetic. He drove like a maniac on the way back. I did write all of that down on my DCL survey. I was extremely disappointed to have such a horrible driver for a paid DCL tour. That was 4 years ago. Hopefully, they have a better driving company now.

Looking back, I am glad we went. It was the best lazy river I've ever seen. If I knew exactly what I was getting into, I'd have taken a taxi and just paid for the stuff that we wanted to do and had a good meal there and not taken the DCL port excursion. When we dock in Nassau next time, we won't get of the ship.

In the Current (which is a "rapid river") you need to be on a tube; they'll ask you to get on one if you just try to float on your own. There are single and double tubes available, no extra charge.

Sometimes one entry to the Current will not have any tubes handy. You can just wait until an empty tube floats by, which seems to happen pretty regularly, or just walk around the Current until you come to an entrance with a stack of tubes near it and enter there.

Thanks for the detailed review! :)

DH and I went to the Bahamas two times before... My MIL and FIL did not travel much except for one time in Cape Cod 35 years ago. The best pool they've seen are pretty normal and boring pools. They've never seen a white sand/blue water beach. Don't think they've ever been in a waterpark before and if they did it was not impressive. I don't think they've seen big aquariums like those in Atlantis either so ...I think they'll be impressed.

You're not the first telling me that the included food is just okay or bleh so I will try to look into the restaurants they have.

And hopefully they have nicer drivers now. ;)

One more question: are watershoes allowed in the lazy river and water slides? Because I prefer wearing water shoes at all times.

Yes, though they don't want them to have any metal bits that might scratch the slides. And you will want water shoes when walking around.

All of them, with two/three exceptions that don't really matter. The Cain pool is just for guests of Atlantis' Cove tower. Its adults only and doesn't have any water features, just luxury looking and kind of daytime nightclub atmosphere.

There's also the Cascades pool between the Reef and Cove towers. Also, no big loss here as its sort-of a quiet pool for the guests in those towers...no special features.

The chairs and amenities on Paradise beach are also only for Atlantis Reef and Cove guests, but again, this beach is out of the way and nothing special. You can walk along the waterline to get there, if you like, as all beaches in the Bahamas are public to the high water mark.

Yes and yes. You might have to hunt around a little for them to get the right size. They just are hung on racks a in many places around the aquventure river system and by the beach entrances.

Great map and info!

Strange the Disney ships are not listed on that site for March 2016. ??

CruiseTT seems to be dormant. The best site for seeing cruise ship schedules that I've found that's up to date is cruisetimetables.com. Sadly it doesn't give all the same information as CruiseTT did, but it's at least current.
