The best motion sickness medicine

but, like MythBusters discovered, Ginger does help! If you are feeling queazy after a ride - Ginger Ale will help! Ginger pills, like a pp said do really help, it shocked the MythBuster crew!

Doesn't work for everyone though.

I take anything ginger if I feel nauseous, and it helps then, but it has never worked for me when motion sickness kicks in.

Heck, I lived on ginger when I was pregnant for the first 4 months! I do love ginger in any form though :thumbsup2

But, my best friend has to take Dramamine when she is on most adventurous rides.......Ginger root.....pills......fresh........or in candy drops never did anything for her.

And that is the point really, until you try a certain product you never know if it's going to work for you.

Like JessicaR, I have had good luck with ginger. My preferred delivery method is to chew ginger gum three or four times a day (I only need it at Universal, while cruising, or that one time DD13 got me to go on Star Tours 4 times in a row with virtually no wait in between). It seems that what works best varies with the person needing it. I hope you find something that works for you.

Has anyone tried a prescription drug called promethazine? I just saw it being used for a boat ride by some characters in a reality show (suppository form!:scared1:)

I love rides but they hate me..it's such a miserable feeling to love something that makes you sick! Scopolamine has worked better than anything but I hate the dry mouth it gives me.

Promethazine is Phenergan and likely it will work, if you can stay awake after taking it. So many side effects it's just not worth taking usually unless you have to. I read an article that the patch has more severe side effects in those with light eyes.

Cruising last year was when I discovered how bad my motion sickness had become. And you are WAY brave for doing star tours!!! :scared: I'm green thinking about it. ::yes::

Ya, it has very little effect on me either. I've tried it in many forms and it really does nothing.

You're very correct in that different things work for different people and you really need to experiment with a variety of stuff.

I found a combination of things worked best for me on both coasters and simulators. I took Bonine in the morning when I got up, I wore Sea Bands and also chewed ginger gum right before the ride. I have terrible motion sickness - especially simulators, spinning and going upside down. Using the combo above I have ridden all the coasters at both parks, The Simpsons, Forbidden Journey, Despicable Me and done great.

Hope that helps and you find something that works for you!

That seems like a good plan. Now that the kids are at an age that they can ride everything, I would like to join them on the simulators. How was your drowsiness?

I didn't seem to have any trouble with it at all. I'm not sure if the Bonine comes in regular and non-drowsy, but I would have for sure picked up the non-drowsy if it does.

...that one time DD13 got me to go on Star Tours 4 times in a row with virtually no wait in between...

DH did that to me! I have a strong pretty strong ride tolerance so it took me a few minutes to realize why I felt so yucky! 2x is now my limit & my stomach isn't what it use to be. I remember when Tilt a whirl was fun?! Now I prefer to watch :)

Another vote for Meclizine.

I take one the night before I fly or plan on going to a theme park.

The next morning I take another one before heading out and I am fine all day.

Then I take one every morning we are heading to the parks.

Works great and I have not had any issues with any rides.

I use the off-brand non-drowsy dramamine. No meds really make me drowsy, so that doesn't matter, but I never want to risk it with the regular. I also struggle with simulators and visuals rather than the actual act of moving. I still have to close my eyes for parts of several of the rides at IOA.

Good luck!

I just bought the Walmart brand Equate that says compared to Dramamine, less drowsy formula. Says it is Meclizine 25mg tablets, helps prevent nausea and dizziness due to motion sickness up to 24 hrs...
Has anyone used this before? Does it work. Really want to have a good time, but worried some of the rides might do us in. DD sometimes even feels nauseated just from riding in the car a long time..
Praying it works and for the 24 hrs. it says!!

Yes, that is exactly the one I use. It works the same as the less-drowsy dramamine and bonine.

I have a prescription for 25mg Meclizine for vertigo flare-ups.

It wipes me out. Even if I take 1/4 of a pill. I'm typically okay if we keep moving, but if I sit down, I get too tired to get back up.

How is it that I needed a prescription for 25mg when Bonine is also 25mg?

 I hope it doesn't wipe us out, not to worried about me as I can take Nyquil and it doesn't phase me, but DH can take Sudafed or Nyquil and he is out,lol... while in the park of course your walking around, but when we stop to eat lunch or supper, hopefully it won't wipe us out..
as for your prescription, how odd, I found a couple different brands of Meclizine in Walmart all 25mg, hope your prescription doesn't cost a lot being the box of 8 I just bought was only $1.97 !!:)

just an update now that we are back. overall we enjoyed ourselves, but I will admit, I didn't do much, I rode some of the rides, but the medicine didn't work for me, I was done after a couple rides...

That's too bad but I'm glad you had a good trip anyway. Thanks so much for letting us know.

That's a shame. I find that I need to vary the rides to make sure that I don't get sick. If I ride two back to back simulators, it can get to me but if I space them out, I'm just fine. Of course, I do take meclizine as well.

your so lucky, I couldn't even get through one ride and was feeling sick..I'd wait awhile and same thing, oh well, guess I'm just getting to old;)
