This thread is to chat about Anti-folk music! Just kind of like the Taylor Swift or JoBros threads, just about good music, and not... Taylor Swift and the JoBros, I don't want to be too insulting here. Artists like Lenka, Regina Spektor, and The Moldy Peaches, and Michelle Shocked!

Yes, have you ever heard the song Uh-merica? She sounds especially good in that. Also in Lacrimosa and Poor Little Rich Boy. They even named a Suite Life episode after the latter.

Wait do you mean just not famous people or not folk, because I listen to a lot of folk, like Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Jason Mraz, and a lot more.

That's folk, not Anti-folk. They are two completely different genres. I mean, I like those artists, but not as much.

I'm confused. Are we supposed to talk about every genre that's not folk?

Anti-folk is it's own genre. Anti-folk is not its literal meaning. I don't hate folk music, I LOVE anti-folk music. It's about the specific genre of music.

I've never heard of "anti-folk" music, just folk music, much of which I enjoy.

since when is anti-folk used as a genrne i thought it was called Indie shrugs

They're different genres. For example Lenka isn't on an indipendent record label (she's with Epic), so she can't be indie, but she is anti-folk. And vice versa, Born Ruffians is an indie artist, but they aren't anti-folk.

If you want to know more, you can Wikipedia it!

Hah, see I didn't know that. I'm more of a punk/alternative rock girl myself. The Moldy Peaches sing "Anyone Else but You" from Juno right?

I actually read about it! I had googled Regina Spektor after hearing one of my friends told me about her in 4th grade. So I googled her and found this amazing genre. I've been to the anti-folk festival a few times, and it's been great every time.

I had no idea the 'genre' had a name.

I love Regina Spektor...find the song called December, it's from a demo tape. And The Ghost Of Corporate Future is my other favorite of hers.

I can't get enough of Joanna Newsom. She plays the bloody harp, people. And has a self-described untrainable voice.

Bright Eyes could be described as anti-folk, too I guess. He played a song called 'When The President Talks to God' that was a cover of someone else's. Check that one out, too...especially now that a certain individual has moved back to Texas.

Kimya Dawson/The Moldy Peaches is/are pretty good. I love "Nothing Came Out" by The Moldy Peaches.

True, there are certain songs by Bright Eyes that pertain to political matters. Desaparecidos, another one of Conor Oberst's bands, is heavily sociopolitical, but it'd be considered more punk than folk (to me at least) so I dunno if that would be considered anti-folk.

I just watched Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian. When I heard Regina Spektor's song come on I was spazzing out. I can't get enough of Joanna Newsom.

Joanna's voice is amazing. I can't find the bowing smiley, but If I could I would so use it for her.
