The Alaskan Disney Dining Expedition - 11 days of Deluxe Dining *Updated 5-20-11*

All we can say is OH MY! The cake is amazing. It’s got a slight crisp on the outside, but fluffy cake inside, and then a huge amount of melted chocolate hidden inside. You cut into the cake and melted chocolate oozes out in what seems like a never ending river of warm goodness. You take a bite and the cake and melted chocolate are so warm and chocolatety your eyes want to roll back in your head. And then you try a bit of cake with the peanut butter gelato – you might just pass out from the sheer joy of the heavenly combination. Fair warning – this cake could ruin any and all other molten chocolate cakes for you in the future. The smear of toasted marshmallow cream is a nice addition as well. Even the brittle was tasty. Every bit of this dessert is a little bite of bliss.

Peanut butter?!? Wow, that sounds REALLY good. California Grill changes the ice cream pairing with that dessert seasonally, and I've had some good ones (blood orange sorbet was the stand out) but I've never been there when peanut butter was offered, and that just sounds SO wonderful.

I'm loving your reviews and looking forward to more. :)

Right now I'm faced with the choice of lunch at Tusker House OR Yak & Yeti. I see you guys did both, and I can't wait to see which one you liked more!!! :goodvibes

Entrance to Ohana

Overview
We’ve done Ohana’s before and wanted to try it again now that our son was older (4) and could interact more with the characters. At this meal we were able to see Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto all in Polynesian outfits. This breakfast is served family style, so everything is in a central platter that is served from in the middle of the table. Getting there was very easy from Bay Lake Tower as it was just 2 stops away on the monorail from the Contemporary.

Atmosphere
When you get off the monorail the check-in desk is just across the upper lobby level you arrive on. When you check in they will give you a pager device and you can just hang out in the area. When they call you they give you all little plastic luau leis and have a photographer snap a couple of shots of your group. Later they will come around to your table and try to get you to purchase their photos – I think they were in the $20-30 range. A host guides your party into the vast restaurant to your table only stopping to pick up a basket with assorted breads.

The restaurant is setup in traditional Polynesian décor with natural looking tied bamboo wood beams on the ceilings and posts. Other items adorn the walls such as shields and spears and there are many carved wooded Tiki throughout the eating areas. The floor and the benches have a traditional Polynesian fabric with busy yet relaxing patterns.

Being a larger open restaurant the noise and activity can be loud at times. They characters rotate through about every 10 minutes after you get seated.

Sometime during your meal they hold a luau event for the kids where they all form a large dancing line and generally have a great time in the restaurant. This time is usually very noisy but adds to the excitement for kids. We were in a very sunny spot so getting good pictures was very challenging.

*Note: This restaurant underwent a several day refurbishment in January 2011, so my pictures and experiences with the décor and atmosphere could be different than what you might experience now.

Starters
When your party is seated, your sever brings over the basket of mixed breakfast breads. There were two breads in the basket, a pineapple coconut bread and the other was a cinnamon raisin. Our favorite was the pineapple coconut bread. It’s a luscious blend of coconut and pineapple with just the right amount of tropical sweetness and moisture to make it memorable every time we visit. Here is a link on how to make it at home (http://allears.net/din/recipes/rec_pb.htm).

What’s a breakfast out without some fresh fruit? Our server brought out our drinks and a fruit tray. The fruit platter has pineapple, grapes, watermelon, oranges and honeydew melon. The chilled fruit was ripe and tasted wonderful.

For drinks we all had POG Juice (passion Orange Guava) and water. We all really love the flavors or the POG juice from our trips to Hawaii so it’s no surprise we loved it here as well. Our server managed to keep up with our demand for it by giving us a small pitcher, and had to replace it twice! I also had a regular cup of coffee to drink and found it to be about average.

Entrée
They serve the main part of breakfast at Ohana family style where all the food in in a center platter dish and you serve yourself from that dish. The breakfast platter is also all you can eat, so if you run out of something don’t be shy in asking for more.

You’ll find pretty standard breakfast fare in the platter itself including bacon, home fries, scrambled eggs, biscuits, and pork sausage (larger link style). The platter is more like a farmer’s breakfast and doesn’t have much in the way of Polynesian or Hawaiian influence.

The eggs were cooked well, fluffy and not overdone, but a little bland being they make them in mass quantities for a large restaurant that includes many little kids. I added salt and pepper to them and they were good. My favorite part is the pork sausage. It’s juicy and the spices are very good. The home fries were cooked well but could have been crispier. They went well with ketchup and the other components of the meal. The bacon was good quality and was crispy, so good marks there (Even DW ate it – she is very picky about bacon, it MUST be crispy or she won’t touch it). The biscuits were average, good when you added butter, but not spectacular. Ohana’s also has Mickey waffles they will bring out for the kids, or if you ask. Those are always a hit.

Overall Impression
Ohana’s is a nice start to a day before venturing into the Magic Kingdom. It’s not fine dining, but instead offers the comfort of a family style meal with a laid back and relaxing environment that’s great for kids. The characters are very personable and are more than happy to sign autographs. Bread and fruit show up right away and are a nice starter before the main course arrives. The food is good and served warm in a family style platter. The service we found was also good with no long wait time between beverage refills and food arrivals. Be aware it can get a little loud with the kids dance and everyone wanting to meet the characters, but overall a good time.
