Here are the players:
Larry - 42, rather reluctant to do this trip until just before we left - ended up having a
blast!
Susan - 36, trip planner, loves all things Disney!
Tara - 12, couldnâÂÂt wait to go!
Prologue and Travel Day, February 2, 2001
The planning for this trip began in November of âÂÂ99, when I originally booked it with
Dreams Unlimited. We were supposed to be traveling to Disney in November of âÂÂ00, but
I changed jobs, we bought a house, and we decided it would be better to postpone it, so
we settled on the first week of February in 2001. In the meantime, I read all I could on
the DIS boards and tried to prepare for it.
I wanted this trip to be special for my daughter, because she has been such a help to me
through chronic health problems that I have developed over the last few years. There
were many days when I was so sick, I could not get out of bed, and she would cheerfully
volunteer to do laundry, cook, clean and wait on me if I needed that. I tried to say thank
you each time she was so helpful, but I wanted to do something more, so this trip was my
thank you to her (and it turned out to be a great one).
I am doing this trip report from memory, and have never done one before, so please bear
with me.
We left home at about 8:00 p.m. on Friday night, made a couple of stops, and then drove
through the night. We ended up in Orlando at about 4:00 a.m., stopped for breakfast at
IHOP and then made our way to Dixie Landings. I thought I could pre-register at any
time that morning, but it turns out you have to wait until 7:00 a.m., so we sat in the lobby
and read the printed information they gave us until it was time for pre-registration.
I had contacted Jane and the Pixies to start my surprises for my daughter, so when we got
there, she had a package waiting with engraved Mickey ears for Tara and me, a baseball
cap for Dad, an autograph book and fat pen, and guest of honor badges for the three of
us. Dad refused to wear his, but Tara and I had a blast with ours (as you will see
throughout this report).
At check-in, we received 50 Disney dollars as part of our package, and I gave them to
Tara to add to her spending money. She thought it was way cool that she actually got to
spend money with Disney characters on it, and it was a neat addition to our souvenir
shopping.
On to day 1!
