Day 1, Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - "Did I See What I Thought I Saw?"

My family picked me up at 5:30 a.m., and we were finally on our way. I decided that a good way to get us in the Disney frame of mind was to print out Delswife's trip reports and read them out loud on the drive down. Tara and I had read them in the past, but Larry never had and I knew he would get a kick out of them. Sure enough, we laughed (and shed a tear or two) through them. The only thing is, it took me about five hours to read them all! About half way through, Larry said, "How long is this trip report, anyway? You need to get some sleep." I didn't have the heart to tell him that the back seat of our small car was in no way, shape or form conducive to sleep for me. After I finished reading the report, I tried to at least take a little nap, but there was no comfortable position to be found. So I just tried to rest and soon we were seeing the big purple signs that mean we are in Disney!

We were staying at Pop Century tonight, and none of us knew exactly where it was on property because we had never been there before. After a couple of wrong turns, we figured it out and drove up to the resort at about 12:30 p.m. Check in was quick and painless. The CM was very pleasant and gave us a card with the phone number to call back later in the afternoon for our room number. She also graciously agreed to print out a list of our PS numbers (one of the things I forgot to pack). We soon caught a bus and were off to Animal Kingdom.

It was really hot and humid today. Since this park is often touted to be the hottest of the four, we knew that we would have to drink plenty of water and make sure we stayed hydrated. We just didn't count on how fast the heat would exhaust us! We stopped for lunch at Restaurantosaurus. Larry and I split a double cheeseburger, fries and a soda, and Tara had a hot dog, fries and a soda. The toppings bar here was a nice touch, although it is not as extensive as the ones at Pecos Bill's or Cosmic Ray's in Magic Kingdom. Our wait for the food was entirely too long - some problem in the kitchen I think, since no one got any food for a good 10 minutes. We received two free brownies for our wait, which was very thoughtful. The food was okay, but nothing special. For those of you who have been following the "Have You Ever Had a Shock" thread on the Theme Parks board, you will be interested to know that nudity is still alive and well at Disney! My husband got an extremely intimate view of a lady's derriere - she was wearing a very short skirt with nothing on underneath, and when she bent over to pick up something off the floor, he apparently saw the sun, moon and stars! Interesting finish to our meal, to say the least!

We then rode Primeval Whirl, one of our favorite rides. I had been having trouble with my neck before we left home, so I decided that once was enough for me. Larry was also content with one ride, but Tara wanted to ride again. Since the line was short, we waited for her to have a second turn. Then we walked over to Dinosaur and rode this with little wait. By this time, the heat, the drive down and very little sleep the night before had taken its toll on Larry and he was exhausted. We called and got our room number at Pop Century and he went back to the room to take a nap. I wanted to see the afternoon parade, so Tara and I stayed for that. During our wait, the heat got to her quite a bit and she ended up sitting down on a bench in the shade. She said she actually could see most of the parade from where she was sitting, but I was standing up close because I didn't want to miss anything. We both enjoyed it very much. I was now ready to hop over to MGM Studios, because I wanted to see the Fantasmic show. Tara had had enough by this time, so she went back to Pop to get out of the heat and take a rest. I went over to MGM and rode Rock 'n Roller Coaster. Then I bought a small box of popcorn and a soda and waited for Fantasmic. The show was so beautiful - I cried at the end. When it was over, I waited until most of the crowd had dispersed before I got up to catch the bus back to Pop. Once there, Larry and I went to the food court for dinner (Tara had already eaten and was sleeping). He had a deli sandwich with cheesecake for dessert and I had a tuna sub with the twinkie tiramisu for dessert. All of it was excellent. I was impressed with the quality and variety of the food here. I also liked the general look of the resort. Our room, although small, was clean and comfortable. We did not hear a lot of noise in our room and would definitely stay here again on a future visit.

Wow what stamina you have - I would have passed out with Larry!

I had always heard the full moons were breathtaking at Disney. Good stuff, thanks for sharing.
