The 51st State?

Many people think Long Island (where I live) which is part of New York should become a state. It's populated enought to become one, but what do you think?

Ha, I've been wondering that my whole life!!
My whole family lives out there, and I always thought it was too big to belong to NY state.

But no, I don't think it should become an independent state.
Why make more hassle and confusion when there doesn't have to be?

Just because something is big enough to be it's own doesn't mean it should be (COUGHQuebecCOUGH). There should be better reasons.

Ahh So They Have To Make New Flags With 51 Stars. Haha Thats The First Thing I Thought Of When I Saw The Title. Hmmm Would It Have Cities, Towns, Villages, Or Would It Be Like A One City State. And That City Is Long Island, Would They Call It Long Island? Im Confused.

It would cause more headache then anything.
First having to go thru the government to be able to declare itself a state.
Then having to change the flag and more to accomodate to the 51st state.
Then having it's residents change paperwork, and not to mention the political aspect.

Just because it's big enough to be one,doesn't mean it should be a state.

I think the people in Long Island like being apart of New York, (that's just my outsiders opinion of the situation) and I don't know, maybe those people would move up into New York. I mean what if they ended up not liking their government set up there. if they seperated from New York they would have to set up their own government.

The reason the want it to become its own state is because they say that the tax dollars we would pay would directly go to our area. They also said that if it becomes a state they may include NYC and Westchester in the state. It would be called "Long Island State."

He would love to see it a state, but I'd rather not. It's been NY for the longest time, and seems to be working fine.

Although there's over 3,000,000 people... which is really unbelievable, It sure does seem to qualify for being its own state...


however you have to factor in the education as well. It'll be a tough process if it ever does become a state...

True. I love LI but it's very expensive. If we became a state we would have to establish a gov't, school system, jail system, etc.

That was what I was trying to get to in my post.
But I'm not good with words.

There is a Long Island City in a borough of NY.

I live in Puerto Rico and I want to become a state of the U.S. Then it will be 51 states! I think a part of our government want to do that but other parts( or parties) don't. So be prepared that someday we will be a state!
