I was there last July 4th, and I thought it was wonderful. Yes, it is very hot, but I thought the crowds were fine. I don't understand why people complain about the crowds, of *course* it is going to be crowded, and you know that when you book your trip, instead of complaining about it, put the smile on your face and know that your in the most wonderful place on earth, for a wonderful Holiday.
We went to Epcot last July, and it was really great. I would recommend the Illuminations fireworks to anyone, they were absolutely amazing. You have the regular show, then a special American finale. They put all kinds of amazing pictures on the sphere, so it is even enjoyable in the mass of people when youre leaving.
I will tell you that to get my family's spot we 'staked our claim" at about 7:30 in the evening, (show doesn't start till 10... or 9, I can't remember, almost certain it is 10, but I could be wrong) We sat on a bench right next to the American Pavilion near the lagoon (this is also one of the spots where they have a firework cannon, and it is neat) If you have kids you should be fine as long as there is another adult. They can dance to the music being played at the Pavilion, or one of you can take them for a walk. (Being sure to leave all the belongings for each member of the party in a space so someone won't take it)
All in all it is an absolutely amazing time, and I wish I was there this year. Have a great trip.
