The 2023 American Thanksgiving Day thread. Discuss recipes, decorations, traditions, or just ask questions related to Thanksgiving in general. I'm in a good mood and thought why not start the count down to Turkey day. Only 22 days away (November 23rd). 🦃🌽🍠🍲🥗🥧🥕🥔🥘🎉party::dogdance::cat:🎈:happytv:⚽🏈🏒🛍️🏬🇺🇸

I can hardly wait for Thanksgiving so my DD20 can come home for a couple days. She hasn’t been here since the middle of August.

I also love Thanksgiving because there are food items that are only made on Thanksgiving, so we really look forward to having them.

I host all the holidays, but both moms bring food items, so my DH and I don’t have to do everything. It’s a very enjoyable day and with our parents being in their elder years, I enjoy spending a lot of time with them - we are very blessed to have them all with us.

Here's your pumpkin 🎃 back. Thanks for letting me borrow it. 🙂

I doubt I’ll be hosting T Day or the December holidays this year but it can’t stop me from watching food porn.

Over the past few decades I’ve seasoned my birds in many different ways but this technique became a game changer of ease and readily adaptable.

Here are my all time favorite cooking experts with Jacques being a classically trained French chef and Julia, the doyenne of American cookery. They didn’t necessarily make what they were doing seem easy but the expertise and respect each brought to their projects and had for each other was quite apparent. The black vs white pepper exchange always makes me smile:

In my entertaining heyday I often made 2 to 3 small turkeys (13 lbers are so easy to fit in any size oven) and seasoned each one differently. W. Puck’s brined bird was a true hit and always the first turkey to disappear. An amazing amt of ingredients and pretty expensive to prep but always memorable with a Germanic spiced flavor:

Nothing wrong with a simply seasoned brined citrus and herb bird.

About wet brining. Some people complain that the skin is too rubbery and that can certainly be an end result if you neglect to air dry the bird for at least 12 hours after brining.

Now I’m getting hungry…..

I posted a video on the World Cup 2034 thread that shows how to make Chicken Kabsa (Saudi Arabian chicken). I think the chef made a pretty traditional version. It could technically work for Thanksgiving for those want to do a family style chicken:

What a beautiful chicken dish! The rice reminds me of a Persian recipe although I don’t think the lemon was used…and I love the fact that ghee is being used as well as the many spices associated with India. Of course it makes sense what with the Spice Route. Thank you much for sharing!

Let me know if you ever make it and what you thought. I think that YouTube channel has other similar recipes as well. You might want to check it out in the future.

We host our family Christmas gathering, so Thanksgiving Day is pretty low key for us. Most years we order the Thanksgiving Feast from Bob Evans. Pick it up the afternoon before Thanksgiving, and it’s enough that we get two dinners each from it plus leftovers. Last year we were invited to our daughter and son-in-law’s for dinner.

MIL hosts Thanksgiving (last year I think there were over 20 people!) I always bring cheese balls and a side or two.

Our steady tradition is some sort of group project where we all write down something we're thankful for. This year's is a tree (bought it at Target) where you write something on a leaf and stick it on:

One of the coolest was a pumpkin. We all wrote on strips of paper, and then I attached them like this:

Usually I get to be alone in the house while everyone goes somewhere else for Thanksgiving and they bring me back a plate. It's just been decided that this year we'll be cooking at home.

I'm looking for recipes for side dishes that don't involve the oven, something I can cook on the stovetop. I'm having a heck of a time because I have a couple of picky eaters. Who won't eat this, who won't eat that. We buy our pies from the local bakery.

My house is full of Turkeys!

Halloween is down, Thanksgiving is up and Christmas is waiting in the wings - the lights will be going up soon, not lit but they are selected and put aside.

We have a Happy Thanksgiving Door decoration from I don't know where but they are hard to find so it is a keeper. I picked up a cute turkey made of some sort of twigs from Hobby Lobby a year or so ago which is fun. I dug out a few older decorative Pilgrims, a couple of turney candlesticks which crack me up and am keeping the pumpkins out everywhere, plus the Dept 56 Apple Orchard that works from Sept through Christmas. I have a few pretty tablecloths but decided to go with whimsy and put out my set of silly turkey placemats, I have adulting elegant stuff too but am just not feeling it right now. I also stuck gel Happy Thanksgiving notes on mirrors to keep the family smiling. Life is too short to not invite some whimsy in.

Haven't decided on the menu yet, we are staying put and I am cooking this year. When I cook I generally let every person pick one thing they want more than anything and make it.

We love this, I've been doing it for years but I do the stuffing on the side

How soon does everyone buy their turkey or do you look for special deals first?

This will be the first year that we will not prepare a whole turkey. Every year the white meat and drumsticks get eaten and the rest is thrown away. This year I am preparing two turkey breasts and four drumsticks. So much easier. I will still prepare our traditional side dishes and pumpkin pies. My grandson has asked me to make Waldorf salad, so I will do that too.

With plans to be in Disney by the Saturday of Turkey day weekend - we are likely to do a much smaller dinner and delay our decorations for Christmas.
