The 2011 Alaskan Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

WOW....Thanks for that!!!! I totally missed it!!

One tidbit on the great list posted - it was taken from the early cruise offerings and some of the excursions available on later cruises are not listed. I hope the thread will continue to be updated as the booking window for later cruises opens up.

Yes, two of the exursions we were considering are not listed: glacier view sea kayaking in Juneau, and the all aboard steam train in Skagway. I did find the info on the White Pass &Yukon Railroad website. It runs once a day on Mondays and Fridays, leaving at noon. It only travels a few miles further than the summit train, so I'm not clear what the value is.

And can you suggest a 'foul weather' alternative too?

(Tracy's WILL be the #1 choice!)

.

Twisted Fish would be a good back up for cruddy weather, or the Timberline Bar and Grill, that is the restaurant up at the top of the tram. Timberline has an all you can eat crab feed.

Does anyone know if "duty free" shopping will be in effect on the Alaska Cruises? My DH bought me a certain perfume on a prior trip and I would love to pick up another bottle at a reduced cost.

Anyone know from previous cruising? Thanks!

Don't know about the cruise line, but if you're coming in through Seattle, there is a duty-free store at Blaine, on the border between the US and Canada. The ship lists a duty-free store on its directory.

Thought I'd bump this up for those of us considering the new 2012 itineraries
So happy that it looks like Disney will be sailing in and out of Seattle

That will save folks in the US some $$ and inconvenience for travel to and from the cruise. I am happy that I'll get to spend some time in Vancouver this year though. The repo from LA to Seattle might be a nice "ride" for my sister and I to go up and visit friends in Seattle! :)

Jsut went digging and found the info after reading it here. Cruising out of Seattle next year would have been SO much eaiser!

Wonder if some folks who have Alaska this year (later in the summer) will move to next year for just that reason? :confused3

.

Me too, but it's set in stone at this point

We haven't bought plane tickets yet so we could potentially move it, but don't really want to. Am considering not even mentioning this to family going with us as they always try to do everything as cheap as possible.

Has anyone else heard that the deposit for the Hawaii cruise is non-refundable?
