The guys were ready, the judges were, in some cases, babbling and Ryan reminded us once again that this years talent was the best ever. My rating system is a 1 through 10 with 10 being the best. On rare occasions, performers may even get a + or two for exemplary work. Whether or not anyone will get any of those this year remains to be seen.
Now on with the show!
David Hernandez Midnight Hour David was given the unenviable opening position. He has a wonderful voice with rich tone but nerves seem to get the best of him and the end was pretty rough. I gave him a
7
Chikezie More Today Than Yesterday This was a really weird take on this song with a terrible start. Add on to that he was all over the road pitch wise. But what really did him in for me was the attitude with Simon. Simon was right and Jacuzzi should have closed his trap. The first week isnt the week to argue with the judges. He gets a
3 and was lucky to get that.
David Cook Happy Together Well I liked the slow beginning unlike Randy and Paula. I found the rest to be a bit on the screechy side. Good stage presence but a mostly forgettable performance. He gets a
6.
Jason Yeager Moon River Another complaint about the new tempos. They seem to be totally messing up everyone including me. It was pitchy and boring. He gets a
3 and a Zzzzzzzzzz.
Robbie Carrico One I had my doubts about One being a 60s song but I see I was wrong. It was released in 1969. While I didnt really care for the song or his presentation, he does have an interesting voice and OK stage presence. After the past couple of numbers, his was refreshing. He got a
7.
David Archuleta Shop Around One World
AWESOME!!!! Everything worked
voice
presentation
stage presence, this kid was my favorite to win it all from the first moment I saw him. I thought if he could pull off a great performance the first week, theyd be nothing he couldnt do. Theres nothing he cant do! Just amazing. He gets the coveted
10+++.
Danny Noriega Jail House Rock Hes an interesting one to watch. His great stage presence more than makes up for his sometimes lack of vocal skills. That was a pretty big song for him to tackle but, for the most part, it worked. I gave him an
8.
Luke Menard Everybodys Talking While I dont think hell be getting any vocal awards from me, he does get the babe of the night one. He was really pitchy and I never have and still dont like that song. The high notes had me gritting my teeth and for most part it was a yawner. A
4 for him and most of that was for being a babe.
Colton Berry Suspicious Minds This song didnt work on so many levels. Besides looking like Ellen, he looks about 7 years old. His voice is OK but he needs to work on stage presence. He gets a
6.
Garrett Haley Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. Heres where the judges and I really parted company for the first time. I loved this performance and I could imagine little girls all over the USA swooning over his smoky rendition of this number. A few big girls too. Simon was downright rude to this kid. So he doesnt look like Mr. Tan man. Geez Simon, shut up! I digress. I think Garrett has great promise. He gets a
9
Jason Castro What a Day For a Day Dream I think this is one of those numbers Ill like better the second time I listen to it. He was the only one to play an instrument and Simon may have been correct by saying the number could have worked better without the band. Interesting voice and presentation and I will be listening to it again today. For now though he got an
8.
Michael Johns Light My Fire Big mistake. Amanda (the biker nurse) already did the best performance of a Doors song Ive ever heard on this show. He should have picked something else because I kept comparing him to her and he was losing. It was way too frantic and screamy for me. He got a
4.
