It has been mentioned in previous threads about AKV/AKL having a distinct "smell" about it as you enter the lobby, and even somewhat outside of the lobby. My concern is that I have asthma, and fear that this "smell" may trigger it. Just how strong of this special smell is it? Do you smell this fragrance in the rooms? :scared:

The only smells we noticed in the lobby were from Boma & Jiko. VERY VERY NICE SMELLS!!!!!!

To me the smell is more of a "woodsy" type smell. If you have ever been to WL its somewhat similar in smell. I didn't find it to be like many perfumes, fragrances you use in the house, etc.

I actually really enjoyed the "smell".

I have moderate to severe asthma and certain scents will close my airways right down. I was afraid of AKV also for the same reason, but I didn't smell much of anything other than boma and jiko while we were there. I was expecting at least a wood smell or animals from the savanna - nope. Of course I didn't venture out to the nightly fire as that would have been a problem. You should be OK.

Thank you twinklebug!!!! I really want to try AKV...again, thanks for your comments!!! This really makes me feel so much better.:flower3:

In the heat of summer there is a ripe smell (IMO) at the savannas. The lobby smells like Boma (great).

Good point - I should qualify my statement by saying we were there in February 2008. I did spend a lot of time on the balcony though and didn't smell anything other than the grass / feed the care takers were putting out. Our room had a constant flow of Giraffe, ostrich and zebra coming and going despite the construction.

The smell I remember was like spices from the restaurants- very nice, subtle aroma

We visitied AKL in July. My DS has very bad asthma. We did not have any problems at all. We even did the fire pit story telling at night.

I didn't notice any kind of aroma (but then I wasn't really smelling out for one!) when we visited in September. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Isn't the fire pit really a "fake" fire? No real logs being used at all.

I notice distinct aromas at all the resorts, but mostly I detect the smell of ionized air.... meaning that the resorts use ionic purifiers to clean the air after filtering it. I work in a computer manufacturing plant and we have a "clean room" that uses this process and I am very familiar with the smell. It is a good thing for your condition. :thumbsup2

I had the same concerns but found that "woodsy" smell not to be a problem. Four out of five of us have moderate to severe asthma in our family. We've stayed at AKL three times already and plan on many more.
Wishing you a wonderful time!! :)

:goodvibes It's FOOD!!!!!! Yummmmy, yummmy food from Boma!!

The smell I smell at AKL is definitely of wood smoked meat. My wife has asthma and it didn't bother her, but if I were a vegetarian it could be a little overwhelming.

....But I am SOOO not a vegetarian!!!! I love that smell and I'm always hungry in the lobby.

The AKL lobby does have a distinct smell. To me it smells like stone brazed meat.
I really like it.
I suspect it comes from the restaurant.
