That old car insurance thing again

Craig

Are you sure that your car hire includes State Environment Surcharge, Handling Fees, Supplementary Liability Insurance, Underinsured Motorists Protection, Airport Operating Fee and State Sales Tax. All this is included for £425.70 for an F4 car for 19 days through Virgin. Now we all know you don't HAVE to have this amount of protection but with America's compensation culture I don't think I would want to drive without this level of insurance especially if the accident was the fault of myself. You may well find that the State Environment Surcharge, Handling Fees, Airport Operating Fee and State Sales Tax are added to your invoice when you collect your car if it hasn't been pre-paid and these are charges that are unavoidable and for 14 days will cost about $140. Worth checking out what extras you are going to be charged for when you collect your car I think.

Paul is right with his different strokes for different folks comments - as long as you are happy with what you've got it makes no difference to anyone.

Best wishes

Well, I've finally got this sorted and the booking is made.

2 adults and 2 children £1590 fly drive including pre booked seats.

I'm pretty sure there will be a small charge for taxes etc when we pick the car up, around $5-8 a day.

The most important thing though is that.............

WE HAVE BOOKED!! CHECK OUT MY COUNTDOWN CLOCK :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I never thought we'd be going again next year.

Now off to book the hotel.

Thanks Rob and everyone for your advice and help on this.

Well done Craig, persistance pays in the end!

Lol is partly right in that Natwest's policy does not include airport and state taxes (although these don't add a great deal to the total cost), but SLI and Uninsured Motorist Protection are. For us the real saving when using independent car insurance is if you manage to make two trips within 12 months (eg August one year, July the following year). This way our Amex travel insurance (approx cost £285) covers us for 28 days car hire (approx cost £700 plus another £120ish for a decent annual insurance policy). The saving pays for one premium annual pass to WDW, and for us is worth the extra hassle.

I accept that the real test would be if we have to claim on this insurance which so far, touch wood, we have not. However, Amex prides itself on good customer service so I'm confident that they will not be unduly difficult if we did need to claim. There is the risk of extra hassle using independent insurance, but for us this is more than balanced by the cost saving.

There's no 'right' answer to inclusive v. independent insurance, or DIY v. package holidays. I always recommend you work out the cost of each and then decide which option is best.

Regards

Rob

Truer words were never spoken Rob. Everyone has their own ideals and as long as these are satisfied 'nuff said!

Craig - your holiday sounds great, I would do a clock myself but can't get to grips with it!

Best wishes

Like everyone is saying, it's swings and roundabouts.
I was horrified that TCD charged me £996 for 2 weeks car rental on a 15 seater van but when I compared it with other companies, the flights were so much lower from TCD that it was actually the cheapest way of doing it.We saved about £70 pp, which when you times that by 12 is quite a lot.
