I just wanted to let everyone know about a new theft technique.... between my mom and I, we purchased three Ipod videos this christmas. I opened mine and there was no problem. My hubby had no problem with his. and then it was my brothers turn. He unwrapped his, was really excited, so he ripped the plastic off, cut the seal, and opened the box...only to find it full of clay!!!!! yup, someone stole his Ipod. and yet the box was sealed shut. So I spent 30 minutes talking to Circuit City customer service. I was told they shouldn't give us a hard time when we go in to the store tomorrow...and I am just thrilled about waiting in those return long lines!! Wish me luck!!

wow they think of everything, don't they?

Good luck tomorrow!!!

I know....my DH said he was actually impressed...but the stupid part....they used clay...if Circuit City wants to go to the authorities, their fingerprints are all over it!!!

Well, let me tell you this: the customer service at Circuit City was amazing! They exchanged our box of clay for a real Ipod. We opened it right at the store to make sure it was in there.
Of course every manager and employee had to look in the box. LOL. I don't blame them....this will be one christmas to remember.

Wow, you're so lucky!

They had this on the news the other day. A woman got an iPod, but when she opened it, it had a wrapped deck of Uno cards in it instead of the iPod. The store refused to take it back, saying that they couldn't possibly know if SHE did it herself.

I saw this too, felt so bad for the woman as I think they said she saved up for a long time to be able to buy one.

Makes you think you need to open EVERY box in front of the clerk BEFORE you leave the store! How sad! :(

The OP said the box was sealed, makes me wonder if it was the worker in the factory that was supposed to put the ipod on the box but decided they wanted one for themselves so put the clay in there themselves before the box was ever even shipped to a store. :confused3

We had an ipod returned sealed, so we put it back out on the floor. Someone purchae it and then came back the same day saying it was filled with batteries. they let them get another one. this was at target

We bought software for DD. She opened the box and the only thing in it was the little inserts they put in it. There were no disks.

wow, how do people do this.

Why are people like this?

My brother talked to a few friends of his..... the box was sealed....but it was not the factory plastic wrap!!! and on the inside there should have been a small round seal(like the ones on a software box) that was missing. So apparently it wasn't stolen from the factory.

Does make you want to open every item before you bring it home.

I work retail and we get all sorts of wacky returns. You really HAVE to take the customer's word. Sounds like this store basically called her a thief. I hope she took it higher! Feel bad for her!

My sister works at a walmart in canada.
The problem they had is people buy stuff, take it home, open the box put in their old one .
Reseal the box and return the item.

She used to run a daycare and brought a new play pen.
when she opened it up there was a old one inside and someone had even gone through the trouble of cutting the legs down so it would fit in the box.

I always open everything now to look at it at the cash before I pay.

I remember working at JC Penney's probably 25 years ago, and women would enter the fitting rooms in the lingerie department, then come out and leave. When we'd go to straighten the rooms, we'd find that they had changed from thier disgusting old bras and panties and worn (stolen) the new ones out of the fitting room.

Same thing happened with sneakers in the shoe department once.

I can totally relate to this... I worked at Sears and we had the same thing happen ALL the time. Worse yet, way back when... Sears had a very liberal return policy. you could return ANYTHING you bought at Sears, at ANY time. So we'd have women who would buy the multipacks of underwear, and then wear them extensively, and then return them.. There is nothing more disgusting than having worn out granny panties returned to you in dubious condition - and having that lady expect a FULL refund. *shudder*

The nicer dress stores here have been having a problem for years with hasidic women buying a very expensive dress for their or sons bar mitzvah or their daughters bas mitzvah or weddings and they wear the dress with the tags inside, then return it the next day, and you can tell they wore it! one of the chain stores here in the mall has a no return policy after 3 times. and yes i know this is true, i used to work in Macys!

Long ago I worked at one of those warehouse stores like Costco. Back in the return department they had a machine that you could put a seal of plastic back on. You would put the product in and seal it in with a curling iron rod type thing. Then we would use this super hot blow dryer to shrink the plastic to the product. Just like new, throw it back on the shelf and sell it. Ive actually seen these type things in craft stores for making gift baskets and such. Anyone could easily seal up a box for a return to the store. I wouldnt doubt that there are people out there who do use these things. Its really sad.

10 years ago my girlfriend and I married and moved into our first house which was a rental unit. We needed a new vacuum and a Target store was literally a block away. I bought a Eureka upright that cost about a 100 dollars or more. The box looked unopened and was sealed by clear tape like the others that were for sale. I took the vacuum home, opened it to assemble it and that's when I got my surprise. I found the correct vacuum that was pictured on the box, but it had clearly been used and the bag had dirt/debris in it. I took it right back and the manager wasn't surprised that much. It looked like to me that someone had taken an older unit that was out of warranty, bought a new one then swapped them so they could get their money back. I found out later why because those vacuums only worked for a while then crapped out. It does make you want to open the box on every item you purchase, but can you imagine the time it will take at the checkout counter to do this?

JCPenney's was the worst! I worked there for 3 years in the children's department. I once had a woman come in with a t-shirt that was very obviously worn and washed (faded, had little white pills all over it, etc). She produced a receipt from 2 years prior and announced that she wanted to return the shirt, as her son had outgrown it! Well...since she had the receipt and we still carried the same item, we had to refund her money. I couldn't believe it.
