That darn Mission Space commercial!

My kids wanted to go on Mission Space before they saw the commercial. It's the one where the group of adults ask the group of kids about the ride - is it scary, etc. The kids say its not and the next scene shows the adults on Mission Space screaming their lungs out. Well, after my kids saw that, they said they would not be going on. From the reports I've read, Mission Space doesn't sound like the kind of ride that would make people scream or be really scared. Can I tell my kids that it's not as bad as the commercial makes it seem?

I rode it during the preview in July, (well, rode half of it, 'till it broke down...) and it was not frightening at all. I loved it! And I know as a kid I would have loved it too!

I've also seen a lot of posts people have put up about being afraid to get sick, and I did not feel that was the case at all, unless you really suffer from motion sickness you should be fine. My legs were a little wobbly after, but I think it was the anticipation of the unknown more than anything! It really is an amazing experience!

The only people who should avoid this ride are those who are clostrophobic(sp?). It is a very enclosed ride, and someone with that fear would definitely be freaked out!

as a died in the wool claustrophobic..1).how small is it is it bigger than a bread box(lol) ..as bad as the roller coaster simulator at DQ? 2)is it completly dark ,3)is there airflow, 4) can you tell before you get in? I can handle 1 better as long as 2&3 are ok and 4) lets me bail with out looking like a screaming frothing at the mouth weirdo.

The ride compartments are four seats across, with a harness over you. Then there is a control panel that is the 'front' of the compartment, which slides into you once seated. So once in, you're in a very confined area, with the doors closed on both sides.

It is not that dark, there is a video screen in front of each seat that is your 'window' to the ship, and control panel lights in the compartment. There is also air that blows on your face to help those who suffer motion sickness.

You can definitely tell before you get in, you will have a good view of the compartment.

That is the absolute WORST commercial for that attraction!!!!
It does not come any where near what it is like!!
When we were there 2 weeks ago, we had my 12 yo DD convinced to go on M:S. DH had already ridden it and gave the A-OK for her!!!!
Then she saw that stupid commercial!!!!
Scared her to death!
I took a lot of convincing to get her to go on it.
But she did and LOVED IT!
She even said that the commercial should be taken off because it does NOT show what the ride is really like.

It is nowhere near as "dark" as it is protrayed. Nor does it jump around like that.

Tell your kids it is NOT like the commercial.....they will love it.

thanks it doesn't look that bad....knowing I actually am in a larger room helps ...anyone who rode both MS and the old 20,000 leagues sub..would you say they are comparable in the feel of being confined? I remember that being kind of close quarters and being a little creeped out when they shut the door but I made it thorough that one with out making the evening news or anything.

Well, I will be the dissenting opinion on this one. I saw the commercial last night and thought it was entertaining. The target audience for that commercial is clearly the thrill seeking crowd. I have been on M:S and love it. I do have to say though, that I did yell the first time I went on it, because no matter how hard you try, you really can't prepare yourself for that blast off!

I think this commercial is in line with the old "Tower of Terror" commercials that showed the occupants standing in the dropping elevator. That didn't seem to have any negative affect on the demand for this ride.

I was thinking that it reminded me of the Tower of Terror commercial too in terms of not being like the ride. My kids were so afraid that they would be standing up without any restraints, that it took several years before either would try it, even when I told them exactly what it was like. Finally in May my son did it twice with me...and loved it. DD still won't try it. -HM

Thanks everyone! You confirmed what I thought. Looks like I'm going to be having a frank talk with the kids about the facts of life in advertising, but it's still going to take a lot of convincing to get them to go on now. I guess I could tell them that the people in the commercial have had extremely boring lives, had never been on many rides and even reacted the same way in IASW!

The ride did not live up to my expectations and I thought that you got more G's from the Hulk coaster or Dueling Dragons at IOA. It was also way to short.

To be honest, the most extreme thing about it was the queue time... I rode it single rider every time.

I rode MS last weekend. I never really felt confined, nor did I feel that I needed to scream. It is a fantastic ride - theming is excellent, etc. Having said that I will admit that I won't be riding it again. I focused on the screen in front of me, just as the castmember instructed me to do. I never felt disoriented. I just didn't like the uncomfortable feeling that I got when the thing was doing the spins. I encourage everyone to give it a try. Disney did a great job. In my party of 6 there were only 2 that wanted to go back again. I'll be interested to see if, in the long run, turns out to be a ride that people do over and over. By the way, I don't mind thrill rides. I rode ToT and RnR multiple times and love them more every time.

We rode Mission Space over Labor Day weekend and it was great. The takeoff and the special effects are simply great. There is no reason for screaming.

This ride is fine for kids. Have fun.

Interesting you should speculate about Mission Space being a ride that people might (or might not) do over and over.
In Sept. my wife went on by herself (I wanted no part of it!!)while I sat outside the exit, watching the people leave after the ride. That day, there was NO wait to get in--no lines of any sort. Yet NOBODY who left while I was outside watching took advantage of that "no line". Not a soul opted for a second trip--including my wife!

Guess time will tell. Again I say that it is a great ride. I just don't see a time in the future that I'll feel like I want to ride it again. But I'm glad I tried it once. Guess it was kind of like Swiss Family Treehouse - been there, done that.

I couldn't ride this because I'm pregnant, but my fiancé and mom did and my mom was so sick so had to run to the bathroom immediately after the ride ended and was sick for pretty much the rest of the day. My fiancé was pretty queasy too after he got off (he said he felt like he was running in circle around a baseball bat for about an hour) but he improved fairly quickly. Neither of them wanted to go back on though, ever during the trip. We did notice that though there was a 35 minute wait early in the day, when we passed by it later it was only about 5 minutes. This seemed to be a pattern each time we were in Epcot so it made me think there can't be too many repeat riders, since TT always had a huge wait, regardless of the time of day, never less than 45 minutes. We met some people on a bus 2 days after my family rode MS and all the adults in the party said they felt very ill for a few hours after riding and will never ride it again. There was a boy with them, around 12, and he said he loved it and can't wait to go back on it.

Did anybody notice that one of the adults in the commercial is also one of the hosts at MGM's Millionaire?
