Thanksgiving- Real stuffing or stove top?

My dad makes our dressing. He uses StoveTop as his base. He adds ham sausage, hard boiled eggs, celery, walnuts and seasonings and lots of love he says :) . It is soooo good.

No stove top here-ever! Real drssing/stuffing all the way.

ITAabout the apples raisins etc. Like what is the deal with putting oysters in the stuffing/dressing? I coudl see if serving it as an entree, but as a side to poultry, I just don't get it.

Don't know about the apples and raisins (I love the different spices with the fruits in dressing...), but I do serve scalloped oysters as a side. It's a traditional New England dish, which I believe was served from the mid 1800's.

The last 2 times I made Stove Top there were some bread crumbs with mold. It looked fine out of the box, but you could definitely taste it. I'm done with it now, but I used to love it.

I make a baked pan of dressing with stale french bread, cut in chucks and soaked in milk with chicken base then squeezed out, with sauteed diced onion, celery and carrot, Bell's poultry seasoning, thyme, salt, white pepper, an egg and melted butter. Then I bake it along with the bird and baste it a little of the turkey juices.

Speaking only for myself, real or nothing at all. I never got on that Stove Top wagon.

But then again, to each his own. And a good hostess accomodates her guests tastes within reason.

Do both. My ex-SIL is vegetarian and I always made a couple of dishes that she would like.

I prefer Stove Top dressing to homemade. I agree that the reason for that is that I've never had one that was good. The ones that I've had are always too moist and really bland. Who wants to eat a serving of insipid, mushy bread? :crazy2: :crazy2: Not me!

I My in-laws put VEGETABLES in their Jell-O and eat it with a side of Mayo!!! I think it's ABSOLUTELY disgusting, and I say all the time that it's b/c Yankee's don't know how to cook good food :rotfl:

That's revolting!!!! Mayo is disgusting enough on its own (to me it is), but to eat it with Jello and vegetables??? That's just wrong!:scared1: I'm a picky eater. If something doesn't look appetizing to me, I will not try it. I can't imagine having to sit there and watch people eat such a disgusting concoction. :crazy2: :crazy2:

People have interesting and odd habits/traditions.:lmao: My friend and her husband are from PA. Her husband refused to eat dinner with her family because of how they eat their food. According to her, they would fill their plates with whatever they were eating, then they would stir it and combine it all into a mixture. Then, they'd eat it!:scared: :scared: Seriously, he will not eat with her family because of this. :lmao:

I think everyone has different tastes. There is no lost art in this house... I cook practically EVERYTHING from scratch, I also can stuff. I already have my homemade cranberry sauce that I canned in my cabinet. I have made plenty of homemade stuffing, all different kinds, and I come from a whole line of southern cooking women, so I have tasted all kinds of THEIR homemade stuffing, and I still like stove top better. :confused3 For what it's worth, I think things like apples and raisins in stuffing is downright disgusting! So maybe that's why I like stove top better...

I agree with you. I cook and most of my food is from scratch. I also have put plenty of fruits, vegetables and jams and relishes by and love doing it. My DH loves Stove Top. I make my own stuffing and he likes it but if I just toss a box of ST and bake it with a little extra seasoning he is thrilled.

I also make a Lithuanian cracker stuffing that he likes as it reminds him of his Gramma but I doubt that it is his favorite.

I think that liking different foods out of a box does not mean that people don't know any better, it just means they like it.

OP- Make what you want, your DH family will like whatever you fix for them.

Dh does the mixing thing with his breakfast!! Oh its so gross!!!!! Eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausage, cheese, and whatever else he is eating.. Oh man I can NOT stand when he does that.. oh must add ketchup too.. :scared:

Maybe it's a PA thing? ;)

I can safely say.. Its just them :lmao: ugh that is just nasty... :rotfl:

Another born and raised in PA who thinks celery in the jello is more than just a bit weird and nasty.

I'd compromise and use a preseasoned bread crumb mix that you add stuff to, but one that is better than stovetop. Then I'd dice the onions and celery smaller than usual to keep the texture closer to what they are used to. We use something like "Mrs. Cubbison's."

It will give a more uniform look, but a taste that might satisfy all of you.

Wow that is why last time I made it I had to throw it out because it even smelled bad. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I think from now on I won't use any stove top. Thanks for solving the mystery.:)

My mom used to use Miracle Whip instead of mayo. I never in my life knew anyone else that did that.
