Just a note to say thanks. I came to DIS tonight to see if they had any info on traveling with a my daughter. We have been planning our trip to the World for the last year. We wanted to spend Kate's 13th B-day with Goofy - her favorite. Anyway a week ago she got hurt playing basketball, thought she had twisted her knee we were wrong. The week we were supposed to be putting the finshing touches on our plans, packing and just plan jumping for joy - we spent in doctor's offices. Bottom line is the MRI is Monday and the doctor said he would call on Tuesday to tell us if we could still go. We leave on Thrusday. She is on crutches and has a brace on so she can't bend her knee. I asked the doctor about rides, his comment was how do you expect her to get on. Well even though I need to call the airline and POR Monday to make arrangements, none of us can wait to go. It will be a different trip then we planned but
with everything I've read tonight I'm encouraged that we will still have MAGIC.

I know your trip will be as Magical as you'd hoped....crutches and a brace won't stop you and your family from having a blast!! :)

Have a great trip and don't forget to tell us how your trip went once you get home!! :)

Welcome to our board... please feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Be sure to look at the FAQ, and let us know any concerns you may have. WDW is a wonderful place to go and heal... it isn't just about the rides. I went last February and only went on 1 ride in 5 days (arthritis was flaring in my neck) and I had a lovely time. :)

glad you got some encouragement here. If you think of some questions we can help with, go ahead and ask.
Here's some pixie dust for a successful MRI.

Thanks for the Pixie Dust! I am confused about the wheel chairs they may have at the resorts, can you take those into the parks?

Since you absolutly need a wheelchair, you might be better off renting from one of the outside rental places. Here's a list of places:
Care Medical:

Walker Mobility:
1-888-726-6837
www.walkermobility.com

RANDY'S Mobility is in Kissimmee 407-892-4777

Colonial Medical

If you don't want to rent one ahead of time, you could always take these phone numbers along and call if there isn't one at the resort.

The wheelchairs from the resorts are free of charge if one is available when you check in. You can take them into the parks. We have never used one because our DD has her own wheelchair. From what I have read on the boards and also the WDW information, you can't reserve one ahead of time and sometimes all that is available at the time is not an appropriate size. I don't know if the resort wheelchairs have elevated leg rests (which your daughter would need to keep her leg straight).

Click here for the DIS site disability page. If you scroll down a little bit, you will see rides/attractions where she can stay in a wheelchair.
I don't know if this link will work, but the official Disney website has a FAQ about what rides will accomidate someone in a full leg cast:
http://disney.go.com/disabilities/mk/faq.html#3
That should help you figure out rides that would have room if she is able to get out for some things. Some of the rides are not ones I would suggest for someone with a leg cast (like Star Tours  ), but the list might help you with some decisions.

Thanks again for all the information. I will take the list of wheelchair options with us.
The list of things she could do while in her wheelchair, brought some pixie dust and a
trace of a smile to her face. I think she is just beginning to understand how lucky she is tio
have her health. We got some great news, no surgery, for now. She has to keep the
bandages and brace on till we get back, but we are truly thankful for the great news.

We leave for the airport in 27 hours!!!!

:)

If you are going to rent from one of the outside companies, you should plan to reserve in advance, before you get there.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!!

Glad to hear your good news.
Hope you have a great time.
