Thanks for honking - I _know_ I can...

In the state of Mass, if you are at a traffic light that is red, and you are allowed to turn right on red, you must stop for 3 seconds before turning. How do I know this??? As I sat in the back seat of the car, as my dd took her drivers license test, she scooted through and turned right. The tester, a state cop at that time, asked her what she had done wrong. She had no idea. She told him that she was able to turn right on red, right? Yes, he said..but only after stopping for at least 3 seconds. And that each car had to make that same 3 sec stop.

That's the point I was going to make. Many people treat a right turn on red like a yield. You do have to come to a complete stop.

You seem to have a bunch of issues with random traffic-related stuff.

Probably because there are so many people out there who don't KNOW how to drive (or care), that it drives others (who actually learned something about driving before sticking the key in the ignition) crazy!

I took a peek and couldn't find a single word misused in my post.
There wasn't, and I apologize for the confusion. I was just pointing out the several 'issues' I have in general, based on posts I've started here on the DIS over the last few years.

What's worse to me is when I'm in the lane that is for turning right and also going straight (where there's no right turning lane) and I'm the first person and the person behind me wants to turn right on a red and they honk/move as close to me as possible/gesture at me to try and get me to move up passed the white line so they can fit to turn right beside me.

Sorry but I'm not going to block the pedestrian walkway because you can't wait 1 minute for a green light.

As a pedestrian, I would like to thank you.

As a fellow driver - with apparent issues ;) - I, too, would like to thank you. I will pull as far forward as I legally and safely can, but I will not drive past the 'stop' line if it as all visible (or can be reasonably deduced) and I will not drive into/onto/around any vehicle ahead of me so a driver behind me can turn.

This happens to me everyday. I try and stand the right side because I have to take an immediate right after the light and people sometime try to squeeze besides me like my car is made of rubber!

Let me see if I can improve my clarity. A legislature is going to avoid providing mandatory language where it has also provided caveats and exceptions. The "may" in the red section has a different purpose and meaning than the "may" in the green section. In other words, it really does matter what the definition of "is" is. :upsidedow

Love this! (and I always felt that there was a reason for asking what "is" is, even back then)

OP I hope your future travels on that road are better!

When I first started reading, a particular intersection here came to mind...the actual lane you turn into is quite far into the intersection, and it's actually an onramp to a highway. I'm never quite sure if it really qualifies as a right turn on red eligible turn. My solution? I pretend like I'm just going straight while the light is red, and then when the light turns green, I decide to turn. :rolleyes1

Maybe this year when I'm studying for the drivers tests I'm sure I'll be "randomly" selected for at renewal-time (WA has been testing tons of people, both written and driving) I'll ask someone about that area! Especially since it's about 5 minutes from the DL office and I'm sure they'll know.

OP,

I am in MA also. I am surprised that because the light turns green you think it is safe to go. I am amazed at the number of cars on the other lane which blow their red light (not catching the end but blowing it). When my light turns green I make sure to check the other traffic for any offenders. Once I narrowly missed being hit by an 18 wheeler.

I work smack in the middle of downtown Boston. For every pedestrian who doesn't obey the walk lights there is a driver who thinks it is ok to stop on the crossway. I walk and drive with the same motto, follow the rules and show no fear. Once you pause while driving the pedestrians jump in front of your car. Likewise while walking a car will try to jump the light if you slow down when the walk sign starts counting down.

With no apologies to sbell - who has already kindly pointed out that I have 'issues' with [seemingly] minor traffic incidents :rotfl: - speaking of this, I've noticed that frequently the same drivers will treat a stop sign as a yield sign... then treat a yield sign as a stop sign!!!!

Not specific drivers; it's not as if I keep notes on vehicles, plate numbers, etc. But I'll be behind another driver who'll pretty much roll through a stop sign; either I'm behind them and there's NO oncoming traffic so, even after stopping/looking/waiting I still end up behind them on the primary road; or, they'll pull out of a driveway or side street without stopping... then, once we're on the entrance ramp to the highway where there's a yield sign and a well-marked and well-delineated merging lane - they STOP!

Or, whether or not they understand the meaning of 'yield' and they see there are no cars approaching, they'll pull from the on-ramp - sometimes from a full stop - directly into the traveling lane, without first reaching a safe highway speed.

No, actually, sbell111, I don't have any issues with traffic. I understand traffic. I have issues with stupid or self-important or selfish drivers.

I would've been honking at you too.... ;)

Me, too! Although if I knew it was you I may be nice and wait with you.;)

but...I'm usually in a hurry because I'm late, (I know my fault) so if it's clear either go or get outta my way!!

Okay, that settles it. Saturday I'm going to the printing place and get myself a bumper sticker:

Yes, it's ME! Now lay OFF the danged horn!

And I'm adding that to my signature after St. Patrick's Day, too! :rotfl2:

I would not move, seriously cars behind you can wait another 10 sec, let them honk, more music in the world.

How about, "Honk once if you're a DISer, bad drivers honk twice"?
Or, "Honk if ya get impatient while I wait and follow the traffic laws ;-D" (with each line in a different color, to match the order of traffic lights :))

Honk once, if you are DISer
Honk twice, if you want to pee
Keep honking if you did not read Traffic Rules

:)

Substituted yellow for orange, otherwise difficult to see.
