On Friday, I became unemployed for the first time. I was working as a Network Administrator for a civil engineering and surveying firm in the Chicago suburbs. The firm has around 50 employees between two offices.

I was working in the server room when one of the partners walked by to say he wanted to talk to me. We sat down in the conference room and the head partner told me that after September 11th, new work has just fallen off of the table, and that they can't afford to keep two IT people. Since I was the newest hire, I was the one to be let go. I am the first person to ever be laid off from the firm, and they hadn't even thought about severence pay. When I asked him about it, he said that they don't have a policy for it, but he eventually said that I will get two weeks severence.

So, this morning I get to go and file for unemployment. I have been sending out resumes to various job sites all weekend. I have been in contact with as many people that I know to let them know that I am looking for a job, and to keep me in mind if they see an opening.

Not ever being in this situation before, I have to tell you it is a little scary. There are former co-workers of mine who have been out of work ksince April, due to the loss of jobs in the IT industry. I hope that I can find something soon.

Thanks for letting me get that off of my chest.

Brian

Brian, sorry to hear about this. Wish LOTS of luck in finding a new job. I e-mailed you about my brother. He's a head hunter and may be able to help.

I am very sorry to hear about your job.

I sent you a PM.

Brian,
Sorry to hear about your job. Sending a bucket of pixie dust. Hope you get an offer real soon.

Brian- wishing you lots of job offers very very soon!

We are sorry to hear of you losing your job. Sending loads of Pixie Dust your way and hoping a great job offer will come your way very soon!!

It is so sad how this event has affected us all, an not even the CM's at Disney have been spared.

Here is hoping to a brighter future for everyone.

IT is a pretty good field to be in. You should not have a problem.

Good luck and Pixie Dust heading your way.

Darlene

Brian, am so sorry to hear about your situation. I feel your pain. DH has been out of work since July. He too is in the IT field. Times are rough. You've got to keep the faith.

Sorry to hear about your job
Keep your chin up you will get a better job soon.

Brian,

I'm so sorry to hear about your job. I would suggest picking up and making a new go of it here in sunny Florida, but those yahoos up in Tallahassee want to take money away from future highway projects and dump it into tourism to help the industry get out of the recent slump. Hello! How silly. Well, I guess since there's no chance of the Olympics, who needs those new roads?! ;) No, no, those of us in engineering don't need the work, either.

Dar :bounce:

Sending pixiedust your way......hope something great comes your way soon.

Brian...

Two sentiments: (((Brian))) - from me and  - from Jay (just picture it with a beard and turban!).

Write, call......send smoke signals, whatever. Possibly Stan will have a few helpful ideas!

Pounds of Pixie Dust,

Jeanie :earseek: Jason

Hi Brian,

I can honestly say, "I know how you feel"...

I was fired today, after 16 years, 8 months with the company. It was a shock!

But in my case, Osama can't be blamed...

The best part is that I won't have to listen to a bunch of crap anymore when I tell them I'm using vacation to go to Disney!

Best of Luck Bud!!!

Dave

my heart goes out to both of you. Good luck and if there is anything I can do let me know...

figgy

Brian and Dave,

Sorry to hear about your jobs, we are feeling the same blow. After not quite 18 yr at his job my hubby just got notice he is being laid off too along with half the other workers in his dept. what is really bad the most senior employee getting laid off has 24 years in with the company. Of course this lay off hits the day we were to leave on our trip to disney. Needless to say that has been put on hold. till things get worked out with another job. But we must remain strong thru all this..he /they will be stopped somehow, sometime real soon I hope

Brian, Dave & Mousefan, my thoughts & prayers go out to all of you & your families. I went through this as a child when my dad got laid off.

Our prayers and success wishes go out to all whose jobs have been effected by our nations' economical problems. Here's hoping that better times will not be far behind as we begin to rebuild our strength as a nation. There are many of us who are great listeners if you need us.

Brian I just talked to you the other day and you did not tell me. Look for something special in the mail.
From one good friend to another. Your roomie.
My prayers will be with you. My son had no trouble getting a new job in your field. With your personality you are shoe in. your friend shirley38

Mousefan...my thoughts are with you and your husband.

And you Dave.....I'm so sorry......I didn't know. :(

Hopefully something better will come for the 3 of you soon.

Too bad you all don't live closer to me.......I could give you all (Mousefan's DH) a couple of nights a week baking pizza's and cooking to tide you over!! Or waiting on tables. Half price on anything you eat while on duty!! :D

It would be kind of a long commute.

Brian, you are in our hearts and prayers, And Remember this OSAMA A WOMAN WE WILL
MAKE OF THEE!!!! then turn you over to the Talis Ban. Did I spell that right?
a fitting end for a coward and a mass murderer. Fanocindys.
