Texas to open 100%

Yeah, makes sense why Texas would be first.

People over the age of 18 work in schools as teachers, principals, lunch staff, janitors, etc. Kids often bring illnesses home from school, infecting parents.

The risks from in person school go beyond those under the age of 18.
Except all research shows it doesn't. You must follow the Rebekah, which would explain a lot.

I know a few of these. I’m positive they are so psychologically messed up after this year that they'll never be around people again. One person at work was going nuts about Texas opening up. Girl relax. We are across the country. Her and her husband are both vaccinated and they still refuse to leave the house. She sits in her corner and refuses to get near anyone. I feel bad for her daughter who hasn’t had any other human contact in a year.
I have, had? friends like this. I feel awful for them. They are so frightened. Their kids are scared of "the virus". I don't see how they turn that switch off.

Everybody here realizes that the state lifting the mandate does not mean that local units of government aren't allowed to have their own mandates and that private businesses can still place whatever restrictions they want correct? It seems there is a lot of hand wringing about a mandate that was largely ignored in rural areas to begin with, is of questionable efficacy, and dubious Constitutionality. I chose to wear a mask before there was a mandate, I'll continue to wear a mask in most situations for the forseeable future, but as my choice.

I find this really interesting...I’m in Missouri, which is clearly doing pretty well in yellow there (only 3 yellow states) and we have NEVER had a mask mandate this entire time.
This whole concept of someone has to be first to try is silly, we’ve been doing it for a year and we’re alright. Restaurants are at full capacity, masks are pretty scarce except at the individual stores that require them and doctors offices. My son has been in person school full time since August. Texas opening up is not some big scary thing, opening up in general is not some big scary thing.

Thank you for saying this. I live in NJ, and when I point things like this out to people, they just get a thousand yard stare and the conversation stalls out. If what you are saying is true, it obviously is, then what did our sacrifices accomplish? It's a lot to deal with. So people just ignore it and continue down this insane road.

I own a medical practice in Texas. My partners and I decided last night to stick with science and require masks to be seen. We'll be happy to reschedule you if you won't wear a mask.

This morning, the largest hospital chain in Houston sent out a letter saying nothing has changed for them and they will require masks in all hospitals and clinics until the science supports otherwise.

You introduce a scenario that is different though as there have always been masks in hospitals and medical practices to some degree. The ‘science’ will never say that should not be the case.

When my oldest was born prematurely we had to mask up to see/hold her. My dentist has always worn latex gloves and a mask or shield.

So to say in a medical environment you will ‘stick with the science’ is frankly a little condescending.

Serious question for you, assuming you are a serious person....

Did you always "mask up" to see sick patients?

Texas is a whole other planet. My wife, a Texan with lots of family still there would agree. She was looking at the infection and death rates and just could not fatham them even thinking about easing restrictions let alone actually doing it. She is concerned for her family there, who fortunately will continue to observe the restrictions as many are elderly.

Protection from a umbrella? It’s only rain not going to kill you like covid can.
It’s a metaphor. You don’t stop doing what works because it works. You keep your umbrella open until the rain stops. I’m not going to put words in someone’s mouth but my guess is that poster means if you abandon all safety precautions and lift all restrictions the problem will become worse. Now it’s not just raining, you’re wet too.

I'm also in Missouri and will add that the big metro areas do have local mask mandates. Which I'm fine with. Let the local areas make their decisions. Our local district has had full time in person for elementary school since fall (actually had in person summer school last year). High schools have been hybrid. I am utterly aghast at what has been allowed to happen with schools in other parts of the country. It's educational malpractice.

I'm looking forward to mask mandates ending in the near future when everyone who wants a vaccine has been able to get one.

You can't just flip a switch, but you can take baby steps every day to try to break the fear. I actually did this for one of my friends. We were their 1st contacts 6 months into Covid. Now, we see them monthly for dinner and fun at their house. It got them to invite their parents to their house for Xmas. They still have only done doc visits for "leaving" the house (aka emergencies), but every visit we have, we chat with them, and my teen girls take their teen girls for walks, etc...both are now thinking they'll do a family excursion out by "this summer", which was not in their calculus at Xmas, but they see us go places and still be okay. I'm trying to set up a date night for a private room somewhere, so they can see precautions are around here, and it's not too bad, but that's still tbd...

I agree with you. When I mentioned someone having to be first I meant a state with a complete mask mandate has to be the first to say “we’re done.” I know other states have never had one. I’m glad Texas made this move. I hope more states follow suit, although I think NJ will be one of the last states.:sad2:

Has has been mentioned a couple times in the thread... Florida has been open for months. Their numbers are trending down like other states that still have restrictions. So, how do you explain that?

Yet some people posting here from Florida say they really aren't open. Not sure what to think of all that.

Various parishes in Louisiana have different rules too. Most are based on positivity levels. New Orleans seems to be the most strict, and our city about a hour or so away had to claw back a few times when our positivity spiked. It makes sense not only on density but also in my opinion based on what makes up the majority of commerce in the locale. I still missed real Mardi Gras parades, and it sucks that Jazz fest is rescheduled to the fall. I still got to enjoy several king cakes. You find your joy where you can.
