Understand that we need 10 of these in order to send a PM. But what about replying directly to a post? Is that OK or not OK? Ive been a member for several weeks, just didn't understand the message count issue until today.

Yes, you can respond to a post if you have less than 10 posts. The 10 post rule is for PM's only.
