Testing out "fuel"

I didn't mean to step on anyones toes. I didn't say a half marathon is a short race. I said referring to FUELING that "I wouldn't fuel at all. The half is to short to worry about it". Believe me, I respect the distance. If I trained for 6 months averaging 70 miles per week it would still take me 2-4 weeks to recover from racing a half marathon.

Here is where I was coming from. Pete Pfitzinger says in his book Advanced Marathoning (2nd Ed pages 37-38).

"If you eat a normal runner's diet, with about 60 percent of your calories from the carbohydrate, you probably store about 1500-2000 calories of glycogen in your muscles. If you glycogen load, however, your musles have the capacity to store between 2000 - 2500 calories of glycogen. Each mile that you run burns about 90-140 calories, depending on your weight and metabolism, and about 75 - 90 percent of those calories are supplied by carbohydrate. If you do a great job loading, you'll have just enough glycogen for the marathon.

When you run, your body burns a mixture of carbohydrate and fat. The harder you run, the higher the proportion of carbohydrate you use; the slower you run, the higher the proportion of fat you use. During walking, more then half of the calories you burn are provided by the breakdown of fat. As your pace increases, you use proportionately less fat and more carbohydrate."

I am not saying the half marathon is easy or halfs that take over 3 hours are easier. Your body is under lots of stess from being out there that long. I just think that glycogen depletion is way down on the list of stesses effecting you. If you want to fuel during your run go ahead I sure don't think it will hurt unless it bothers your stomach. But you should be able to find that our by doing it during your training runs.
