My husband & I were talking about what would happen if someone was riding on Test Track & the wall doesnt open in time or at all.

What is the wall made of?

There have been a few times where the wall was already open when we turned the corner.

It's not a wall, it's doors. On hinges.

By how fast it moves, I would think it's not heavy. If it doesn't open, I assume there's a failsafe to stop the car, because that's how Disney usually does it; and if you hit it, probably not much would happen. Other than a loud noise, followed by your car being brought quickly to a stop by the ride computer.

And they'd probably give you a FastPass for Mission:Space or Soarin'.

If I recall correctly, I thought I read or saw somewhere that there is actually a switch or motion sensor or something that opens that "wall" as the car you are in goes by that switch or motion sensor or something. Therefore, I would assume that should that fail and the "wall" not open, the car would stop. Not sure though!

On a side note, I also thought I read that when Test Track was getting ready to debut, they went through one of the final tests and when it was going through the first braking "test", the car didn't stop, fell of the track, and slammed into the wall in front of it. I believe that car is on display near that section (unless they removed it or if this isn't true)!

1- I'm sure you did read that.
2- OK. Maybe.
3- Silly.
4- Sillier yet.
5- That car is a prop.
6- There USED to be a very fine special effect used in that room.
There is a car on another track in front of you as you enter that room.
The other car races into motion and DOES hit the wall in front of it. (It is a different wall, but looks like the one YOUR car is headed towards.)
The SFX car wrecks (crumples) as it hits its wall.
Then, YOUR car begins its run at the (break-away) wall (which, of course, safely opens, just in time, to the outside run.)

You can see how that very cool effect would set the mood for your approach to the wall, and how RUMORS about it could easily be formed (or simply "made up") about the other EFX car... which, sadly, now just sits there, motionless, in front of you.

Yes. I am very sure.

And, I always look hopefully as we enter that room... to no avail.

Yup. Sure wish they'd reactivate that effect.

Maybe... after the economy rebounds. (We can always hope.)

I FOUND it!

HERE is a YouTube Video that shows the CRASH effect.

It happens at about 2:27 deep into the clip.

I wish it was clearer, but you CAN see it pretty well.

(I might be crazy otherwise, but I do remember this effect. :goodvibes )

There have been a few times where the wall was already open when we turned the corner.

I read another thread were this happened and guess what, they crashed through the wall with no problem because its made out Styrofoam.

I think the comment was "WOW how are they going reset that effect."

RObo- I miss that effect too. It just is not the same without it.

And I swear they open that door much sooner than they used to.

I would have to believe that disney has thought about that so I'm sure the wall is made of something is not very heavy so you don't get hurt if that happens.

well what happens if you run into a hinged door that isnt locked
the door opens
im sure the same thing would happen here

Yes but hitting a free swinging hinged door at 40 mph with a 1500 lb car is different then hitting a hinged door at 5 mph with just your body.

Inertia is not your friend here. :goodvibes

Torque and rotational inertia

Of course the point is moot, the doors aren't hinged, they split and slide away to the sides so they are on tracks.

They're radioactive, with a laser failsafe which is set to go off a split second before you'd hit the unopened doors. You'll vaporize instantly and feel no pain. It would have to be a closed casket funeral.

Awesome. That's how I'd want to go... :rotfl:

Hi Robo ~ How long ago was this affect working? I cannot recall seeing it before, I will ask the family tonight if they remember it? :goodvibes

First couple of years Test Track was open.

We were at Disney for the first time in September of 2000. I don't remember it but it was probably working then.

:)

Yes. I think that they DO open it much sooner now.

If you take a look at the version of the attraction that I posted earlier

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Q9jVwKkxY
and you watch at what point the doors slide open,
(looks as though the car is really going to IMPACT that wall before it opens)

and then check this other version of the ride (obviously much later than when the first one was shot)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlBn48FPoak

you'll see the NON-MOVING crash-test vehicle at about 2:18 deep
(it's an SUV these days) and then, keep watching to
see when "our" car approaches the "wall" and notice that
the wall (doors) slide open much sooner while "our car" is still
a bit of a distance away.

(They've "dumbed it down" quite a bit, it seems to me. ;) )

I thought that it opened sooner on my last trip too...but no one else seemed to think so! It is nice to see these two videos together...now I know I am not losing my mind! lol

untill i saw the second video i never even realized that the crash test car wasnt moving any more when i just rode it the other week
