Are these 2 rides similar? I have rode the racers in Disneyland and loved it, my son is a little nervous doing Test Track
They use the same ride mechanism, but are as similar as EE and The Matterhorn... that is to say, not very.

The entire "RSR is soooo much better than TT" is just lost on me (and DH and DGD too). While RSR is a better overall ride I just don't find the rides that far apart. I do think they are quite similar when you get right down to it. I can't imagine a child that liked riding RSR would not like TT, or vice versa. They are similar enough that if you enjoy riding one you would enjoy riding the other.
We find TT to be a little boring. I wish it was shutting down instead of Soarin'. The theming and track are bland. There's one point where it speeds up in a straight line and makes a turn. WoohooIt does feel slightly faster than RSR, and the build part is ok. RSR has awesome theming. The ride itself is interesting and varied. The race against the other car is fun too. In Summer 2013, we waited probably over an hour for an RSR FP, then we waited probably close to 2 hours to ride it, once our FP window started
I think it was worth it. I wouldn't want to do that every trip, but I would do it again. If I had to wait that long to ride TT, I would be very angry
If you like the build part, just do Sum of All Thrills, assuming you meet the height requirement. The build is awesome on that. The rides not bad. It's not as good at the Kuka arm rides at Universal, but it's still fun to ride what you build.

I'd actually give a bit of a nod in Test Track now to overall experience, just because of the designing your own car it competing against others.
Absolutely!
While the car drive mechanisms are about the same...
the RIDE experiences are not similar at ALL!
I am blown away at those who say they are very similar.
Radiator Springs Racers tell a story and offer many unique "dark ride" scenes during the ride.
Lots of color, excitement and even humor… with transformational "magic" and outdoor scenic vistas unmatched on just about any Disney ride in the US.
Test Track has now been stripped and dumbed-down to level of riding through a light-box.
RSR have nearly singlehandedly saved Disney California Adventure as a popular theme park.
