Terrified about the Incredicoaster... Sensory Processing+Autism+Anxiety

REALLY? That's so interesting! I thought for sure they would be comparable! It was very much the being lifted/dropped sensation and sort of "hanging" that DP was nooot interested in at all, we have lots of family who said it was not a good idea either so we were able to X guardians based off those. Jumpin' Jellies was another one that didn't go too well. Gosh that's so shocking to see.

Can I ask if you know what about Guardians DH likes? I'm so glad you commented! It's so hard to get a solid hold on what would or wouldn't go over well until you ride it.

Thanks for sharing, have a great day! :D <3

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but if Jumpin Jellyfish didn't go well, Incredicoaster needs to be completely off the table. I would imagine the JJ ride either gave him belly tickles that he found unpleasant or the height was too much. Both of those things are exaggerated immensely on Incredicoaster.

They are definitely different, there are other items on the OPs list of must dos that if Jumpin Jellyfish was an issue, I would think would also be an issue, so I can't equate one to the other here.

My 10 year-old has some similar issues (sensory processing, anxiety, OCD) and a lot of our our 4-day trip last summer revolved around whether we would or would not ride certain "big" rides like Guardians or Incredicoaster. We definitely didn't push, but he also perseverated about whether or not to ride a lot. We went through the line for Guardians 3 times (well shorter because we had DAS) with him jumping out at the last second.

He did impulsively decide to ride Incredicoaster first thing one morning because dad was getting on and the line was short. Since there was no line there was no time for him to talk himself out of going. This also meant I had to ride since I had promised to ride anything he wanted to go on.

I've done big rollercoasters in my youth but nothing like this for like 20 years. My main feeling of the ride was that it was fast. So fast, I couldn't even really process what was happening. We went through the loop and I was even sure it had happened as I didn't get that stomach falling feeling I was expecting. The loop is also quite small compared to other inversions I did years ago. I'm pretty afraid of heights and I never felt scared of that as it was all such a blur. I'm pretty sensitive to smells, but didn't notice the cookie smell. Maybe I was blacking out because I hardly remember any of the theming. There were big drops which I enjoyed (and I for one did ride Guardians and absolutely loved it).

DS said he liked it and that it was epic. And also that he never, ever wants to ride it again. Riding it was a highlight for him though. He still talks about it many months later and tells everyone that he rode it. He didn't have a meltdown after, but he was nervous and refused to go near that side of the park for the rest of trip, worried that he might somehow end up riding again. We did take a break pretty quickly after.

I hope whatever DP decides they enjoy their next trip.

On a side note.....I have been trying to figure it out, but can't, whatndoes DP stand for?

I was going to say Disney Person because OP also uses gender-neutral pronouns (they/them/theirs).

OP I don’t have any experience or advice (I totally chickened out of riding it because I hate drops) but just want to echo that we’re in your corner! You’re such a good parent and you’re doing an amazing job.

I read online it was used interchangeably for Dear Person/Disney Person, so I was using it in that way, but it also can mean Dear Partner! I'm not really good with terminology I admittedly did a really fast search before making my post and went with what I thought was best xD

Thanks so much, everyone! I can't say it enough, we're feeling more than prepared now no matter how this turns out. DP's most comfortable with having a conversation with Cast Members as suggested, then going through the queue and making a final decision at the ride car and no matter what happens from there we'll know how to help better. A lot of this made them feel way more comfortable with trying and we feel better prepared to help and support in the way that's needed. The more we know about specific sensations and what can be upsetting, the easier it's going to be to help. Thanks so much for all of the insight.

Our trip is coming up very shortly and we're looking forward to it! :D

Please do us all a huge favor and however it turns out, come back here and report it, I think several of us are now invested in the story and it is always frustrating to not know the ending.....lol

Really, have a great trip.

Keeping this brief, sorry if wording is harsh just want it short as possible! ^^

DP is on the spectrum. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Anxiety, and a few others. Most rides were "we're riding this 900 times" "i refuse to even look at it" or "one and done". There were a handful of meltdowns and we got through it but now the question bodes:

The Incredicoaster. To ride or not to ride? There was a huge interest in riding it but also a lot of fear - meltdown right before park close on our last day right in front of the ride. We have plans for every other obstacle of a ride, but we can't seem to find a plan for this one.

We had an entire day set up to "work towards" DP getting on last time we went, or at least trying, but everything worked against us - including the ride breaking down when DP did feel ready to go on. When it came back up, DP was having a really tough time with a meltdown and we decided it just wasn't the time to try. There were so many clear signs that it was a "Don't go on it!" and we just gave up.

But this time there's more interest. I'm still worried though. Our plan was for a friend to ride all of DP's favourite and least favourite rides and then ride Incredicoaster and give the final yay or nay, but unfortunately, they're not able to make it and DP is upset. So, I'm asking here, can anyone else who has ridden (I haven't, myself) maybe provide a bit more feedback than "it's fast, high in the air, and there's a loop" because that seems to be about all the feedback we can get. The loop scares DP - but DP has an inversion table at home and loves to be upside down on it.

Does day/night make a difference for the light sensitivity? Is it better to go at night for pretty lights being a distraction from everything, or is that a headache and a sensory overload? I don't want to force DP to go on or not be doing well after, but DP's also worried about missing out.

In case it helps for general as to what goes over well/what doesn't:

Loves: Mator's, Space Mountain (but felt very spacially aware of the person next to DP and didn't like that. DP will sit alone next time), Pirates (first drop in the dark especially), Peter Pan (the feeling of flying), Ariel, Indiana Jones (bumpy, being thrown, loved how "even" everything was), Grizzly River Run,

Dislikes: Big Thunder (DP rode in the front, thought it was too slow and not bumpy enough. We'll be trying the middle row next time), Mickey Fun Wheel (terrified of Ferris wheels), Jumpin Jellyfish, Guardians (we rode a kids-version of a SuperShot at a fair before going to DL originally and that was a no-no so we didn't even try for Guardians as we had to leave the fair after the SS), Gadget's Go Coaster (rated almost as scary as Splash Mountain.. except DP would go on Splash again and not Gadget!),

"One and Done"/it's scary and uncomfortable or not liked but worth 1 ride: Soarin', Splash Mountain (this was a very huge deal the drop was a big problem but DP does want to try it again), Radiator Springs (DP's favourite was the bunny hills and going fast, everything else was considered boring), Goofy's Sky School (didn't like the hairpin turns and feeling like DP would fall over the edge. DP is worried about feeling like this on the Incredicoaster)

IF we do ride it, our plan is to ride it just before a breaktime. We're packing lunch, so we'd go sit in the World of Colour viewing area with a weighted lap pad and then ride Ariel after we co-regulate and get some food, - and in worst case scenario, we'd hopefully be able to leave the park through the Grand Californian and head back to our hotel to cool off for a couple hours. I'm not sure if we can transit through Grand Cal if we're not staying there, but it's the quickest exit out of the park we're aware of if it's too much. DP was hoping to be able to bring an iPod on the ride but I'd be worried about it being lost or damaged - and I doubt music would be heard over the wind and ride audio. DP doesn't like earplugs very much.

But is it worth even trying? Or is it just going to put DP in an uncomfortable situation? DP doesn't want to ruin their vacation or feel like an amazing ride was missed out on, and is very anxious about withholding the rest of us from riding, but also does want to try it and they've been working up to it but feel very overwhelmed around it. We've repeatedly expressed DP doesn't have to ride, we can do rider swap if DP doesn't want to be left alone. DP can also ride Ariel endlessly, play the Pier games, or do something else while we ride Incredicoaster if we even feel like riding it - we can skip it completely, too. There are lots of ways we can work around it but they're not sure what to do, DP is very upset about it and has cried many times over the situation :( and I suggested posting here about it in hopes of getting some insight.

so much for keeping this short! worry got the best of me.
Disney is one of those places where there's no pressure to ride every ride. If they want to ride a ride 5 or zero times, great! Do whatever makes them comfortable. If others make them feel bad for not wanting to ride a ride, heck with them!

Of course no pressure and nobody's forcing anyone, or making them feel bad for not wanting to ride. Thanks for your concern, we appreciate it! Have a great day :D

My son has SPD, when he was younger he would do more roller coasters. Incredicoasters is more stimulating at night.
It is not as overstimulating as Guardians but it way more intense then Space Mountain or Indy.
He won’t do Guardians anymore because it leaves him completely disoriented but he will do Incredicoaster. However last time we did it before he had eaten anything in the day and he got nauseous. I’ve had the same thing happen to me on that ride. You definitely don’t want to do it right after eating but I also don’t recommend doing it before eating at all for the day.
Bottom line it’s fast, the loop is not bad at all it’s just fast and has a fast start and fast end.
It doesn’t feel super high when your up there because it doesn’t pause at top it just goes.
If he has any issues with speed I’d say no go.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, we were told there was the smell of the Jack Jack Cookie Num Nums pumped through one of the tubes. Glad to hear it shouldn't be an issue!

DP will have a fantastic time, we were just looking for some insight for the final decision. Thanks! :D
Just got back, rode this several times over a few days, and there’s no smell. Maybe it was a short-lived effect, or maybe it was a different smell (a guest’s cologne or perfume that was more noticeable in the tubes, idk) that someone thought was that & reported it as fact. I’m pretty sensitive to smells so, I’m pretty sure I’d have noticed.
Even if it had been there, the time in the tubes is just a few seconds, so by the time it registered, you’d be past it. (Which might be why *if* the effect ever was there, it’s isn’t anymore)
The loop is really quick — I always try to look around but it’s just over in a blink. If height is a concern, she can close her eyes as you go up the hill. The flashing lights are a lot more overwhelming at night, especially since there’s a lot more lights all around the boardwalk area at night anyway. The loud music is a much bigger concern for overstimulation in my book. Foam ear plugs are all that can be worn. Headphone-style hearing protection won’t be allowed due to a ride of them coming off.

I think the rider swap strategy is a good one. Explain to the CM why one from your party should go on first, and that should help to reassure DP that there’s no pressure to ride if she decides not to once you get up to boarding.
