Terms that annoy you

"Hot mess" reminds me of another saying I hate..."rode hard..." I won't finish it, but you KWIM.

While on this topic, just something for POTC fans, if you think it's tough putting up with annoying terms, here's an excerpt from David Cordingly's "Under the black flag," a fascinating history book on pirates. Basically, it's describing how to set the sail so that it doesn't get tangled up in the ropes. If you have the POTC collector's DVD sets, Cordingly sometimes shows up in the historical interviews about what Jack Sparrow's crew really would be like. Are you ready?

quote: "Lift the skin up and put into the bunt the slack of the clews (not too taut) the leech and foot-rope and body of the sail, being careful not to get it forward or hang down abaft. Then haul your bunt well up on the yard, smoothing the skin and bringing it down well abaft, and make fast the bunt gasket round the mast, and the jigger, if there be one to the tie."

Now in plain 21st century English: Make sure you get the sail over the pole and keep it straight. (The "yard" is the pole the sail hangs from. It's perpendicular to the mast.) Don't forget to tie it down.

Aren't you glad you're not a sailor in the 19th century British Navy? :lmao:I bet in real life, most people would have trouble understanding what Jack Sparrow says.

Now on the other hand, they still kinda talk like this today. You should hear how they talk in the America's Cup. I've heard the Kiwis talking during the '00 event. One said "We've got less pressure going athwartships. Let the spinnaker out a bit more and then we'll start tacking so we can get closer to the wind. We have to get this over with since we're running a symmetrical spinnaker." Not much improvement is it?:lmao:

Pregnant? What are they supposed to say? :confused3 I'm with child? Bun in the oven??

:rotfl: I agree, these would be worse!! But what I can't stand is BABY BUMP!

DH has picked up the phrase "get with" for get together with, hate that, too.

And at work, "be proactive" although I think that one is finally dieing down.

"Think outside the box" is another one I dislike. Although, I do think that one is not used as much anymore.

I should have said that I don't like how "pregnant" sounds. It doesn't grate on my nerves or make me cringe like the other words. I do use it mainly because terms like, "knocked up" are offensive to many (though it is how I referred to myself back in the day). So sorry for the confusion!

Grow - You can't grow something that isn't living. You can't grow the economy, and even though salesmen may use a lot of "fertilizer", you can't grow your sales numbers.
.
My Bad - I always have the same reaction. Finish the thought. Your bad what?

OK, I'll add a few:

When I was pregnant for.... - I wasn't pregnant for anyone but myself when I was pregnant with my kids!

Supposobly - when they mean to say supposedly

Any double negative anywhere, anyhow!

And I really hate baby daddy too!

My DH says "supposivly"...it drives me nuts. He know it's not right...he says it just to get on my last nerve!:headache:

I thought of another one that bugs me...Dude. I know Crush says it, but it's just not cool! It sounds dumb...and disrespectful! My youngest tried calling me "Dude" one day, and I stopped that one fast!;)

My MIL always says 'when I was pregnant to your husband." What does that even mean??????:confused3
