Terminal 4 Heathrow / Question for jjpenguin

Hello! I haven't been on this board -- or any DIS board -- since last autumn since I am not planning any trips to WDW this year (more's the pity). I am, however, planning a trip to Amsterdam and Florence this October. This will be the first time I've been to Europe without spending any time in the UK (again: more's the pity!). This, of course, means I won't have to buy pounds.

I will have a three-hour layover at Heathrow Terminal 4 between my flight from Amsterdam and onward flight to Seattle. Oh, how I love Terminal 4 shopping! :teeth: So my question is: Does anyone know if the shops at Terminal 4 will accept euros as cash payment, or will they only accept pounds? I've only ever had pounds to spend there, so never paid any attention as to whether euros are okay.

My question for jjpenguin is this: Can you tell me how to pronounce the vowel combination "ui" (as in Spui)? I doubt I'll ever really need to know this, seeing as I've been told that literally everyone in Amsterdam speaks English better than any native English-speaker, but it's really bothering me that I don't know how to pronounce it properly. I've seen in guide books that it rhymes with "ow" as in "cow," or "ay" as in "day," or even "eye" as in ... "eye." Also, that the s sound might be sssssssssss or it might be more like shhhhhhh. Anyway, I'd appreciate any insight.

I wish you all happy, happy, peaceful holidays this year! :sunny:

I am sure that they will accept Euros as I remember a sign at Gatwick saying they will accept them but change is possibly given in £'s.

Have a lovely time in Amsterdam :)

Claire ;)

Thanks, Claire! I'll bet you're absolutely right about change being given in pounds, which is just fine with me. Plus, I'm sure there's a currency exchange kiosk if I absolutely must have pounds.

DH works at Heathrow and he will try and check this our for you at work tomorrow.

I'm here...just haven't had much time on the boards yet as I decided to reorganize 'my' room where I do all the creative stuff so my laptop has been hidden under mountains of material, beads, patterns, bits and bobs etc.

Londonpenguin, I think you've picked the most unusual combination to ask... it's difficult to find an english word that has that sound.
Maybe if you start off with the ow of cow and end with the euw (the one you say when something's yukky!) you may approximate it! Or if you say Oh, no with a very exagerated posh english upper crust accent that is somewhat like it.

The s is just a normal s. Now the sch... is an entirely different kettle of fish.

But everyone speaks english, so don't worry.

Thanks, jjpenguin! Yeah, that's a pretty odd vowel combo for an English speaker, and I think I will try to avoid it altogether! :teeth: I will just count my lucky stars that the Dutch are polyglots.

Teresa

Hope you have a great trip and if you have any questions just shoot me a PM
