Teppanyaki question

I know that the chef prepares your food right at the table. Both DSs, as well as DH and I, are on the picky side, when it comes to food. We all have ingredients that we would not want in our food.

Do they ask you specifically what you want??? For example, my older DS likes brocolli but wouldn't want mushrooms or onions or anything else mixed in with the meat and noodles. Do the chefs speak English and do they ask you EXACTLY what you want??

I have visions of ordering the "chicken and steak" combo and then the chef immediately cooking it with mushrooms, onions, etc, before we'd have a chance to say that we don't like some of those ingredients. LOL

If someone would give me a play-by-play of this restaurant, from the time you walk in, until the time you walk out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! :)

We you sit down. Get a drink order. Then order your food. You can tell the server that you dont like this and that. They will write it down for the chef. When the chef comes out he will go over what you want. He has a slip of paper that he knows what you ordered. When comes to you reiterate (sp?) what you dont want. My son does not like zucchini. He will put his potion aside they put the zucchini in for the rest of us. It will be fine. They are very acommidating. I hope this helps.

Thank you! That is very helpful, and now I feel better about our upcoming meal at Teppanyaki :sunny:

Let me insert that if you are allergic to anything, he still cooks everything on one grill, so you may get some mixture going on! But as far as taste, they will separate it...or do like I did and just don't eat that part! Mushrooms make my stomach feel funny, so I just didn't eat the mushrooms. :)

It has been a while since I've eaten at Teppanyaki, but the plated part of the meal was white rice, whatever "meat" you wanted, and everyone gets mushrooms, onions, and zucchini. I might be missing one other vegetable, but just wanted you to know that your plates will look pretty skimpy if someone doesn't want most of that stuff. Just something to take into consideration.

thanks for asking this question
DS will most likely have chicken and rice and nothing else - glad to know he can order it that way

::MickeyMo We went to Teppanyaki this past May and the May before. Believe it or not, we had the same chef at the same table. Go figure. Anyway, I had the chicken and steak. Both times I got the meat separate from the vegatable. In 2004, he asked who didn't like mushrooms, but this past time, he didn't. I don't know why. He adds them together at the last minute, so the flavors don't blend together. I've always just eaten around the mushrooms. I'm sure you can speak up and they will accomodate you. I would suggest letting the woman who takes your order know in advance. ::MinnieMo

They will clean the grill and cook foods separately for those with allergies. I am allergic to mushrooms. Nothing serious and I can pick them out of foods. The chef was very concerned that I would have a reaction and wanted to prepare a new meal for me. I had to assure him that I would be fine. The chefs at all Disney restaurants take allergy issues VERY seriously.

I don't remember if the Epcot Teppanyaki is the same, but I love Teppanyaki style dining. Dinner is usually a series of "courses" and pretty much everybody who is sitting at the table's food is cooked at the same time. You should specify any food allergies or dislikes when the waitress takes your order.

Generally, the waiter will bring drinks out first, then a hot towel for your hands, then salad, sometimes pickled japanese veggies, soup, then rice. Meanwhile the chef is doing his thing. He will reconfirm what people ordered for their entree portion, this is also when you want to speak up about any allergies or food dislikes. If you have a severe allergy, the restaurant will cook your food in the back kitchen so it doesn't get contaminated with whatever else is being cooked for the guests at your table.

Most places, opening veggies are mushrooms, onions and green bell pepper. Maybe garlic and sesame seeds too. The chef cooks it all in one big batch then portions it out to each person's plate. I've never asked for a veggie to be left out so I don't know exactly how they accommodate that but I am sure that they can and will. This is so you've got something to munch on while the chef is preparing everyone's entrees. Whatever you order for your entree, it will be "plain" - just meat (or chicken or shrimp), not dressed with any other veggies or garnish.

After everyone has received their entrees, the chef makes a 2nd veggie - most places I have been to this is bean sprouts. Just checked All Ears and their menu says they have udon noodles. Not sure how they serve this - I am guessing they fry it up also.

Lastly, the waiter will ask you if you want to order dessert and if not bring you the check.

Hope this helps. :flower: Wish I could go get some good Teppanyaki again soon but I just got back from Hawaii and I was spoiled there! Ate twice at my fave teppanyaki restaurant. :teeth:
