I've heard great things about allergy awareness at Teppan Edo, but I've always crossed them off my list, thinking DS would just get some grilled meat served over rice from the back and he HATES rice.

Lately, I've been hearing enough things to make me wonder if I'm mistaken about what he'll be served. First, I heard somewhere that they don't make fried rice (I guess fried rice isn't authentic Japanese) meaning the grill isn't constantly used to scramble eggs, one of my biggest concerns. Second, I found a menu on allears and watched a YouTube video of a hibachi service and it seems they serve udon noodles which are usually just wheat, salt, and water and which would go over much better with DS than rice. It seemed the hibachi meal was basically, noodles, veggies, and meat. DS has never had shrimp and my DH is lobster allergic (though never reacted to shrimp, he's no fan and tends to avoid it), but they could put that on the grill last or my whole family of 8 would definitely be willing to forego shrimp for DS and DH's benefit. DS is no fan of veggies, especially the ones I saw served on YouTube, but I don't really care if he's not allergic. He can pick around them or maybe he'll give them a try in light of the entertainment.

Anyone have any experience they can share about what they were able to get at Teppan Edo? I'm beginning to think it might be an unusually safe meal and one where he can eat what everyone else is eating. Plus the hibachi experience would be fun. Also, anyone know what kind of allergy-friendly desserts they have on hand?

FTR- DS is NOT sesame allergic. He eats sesame seed buns regularly.

Any info would be appreciated. THANKS!

DD11 has allergies to dairy, egg, tree nuts and peanuts. We have eaten at Teppan Edo several times. Ingredients may change, but the udon that was used last year had egg in it. Most udon does not. DD11's egg allergies are low enough that we didn't worry about the meal being prepared on the same surface. We had good "allergy" experiences with the food and staff at both Teppan Edo and Tokyo Dining, but DD11 enjoys steamed rice and grilled meats. I believe they will prepare some meals in an allergy safe area in the back, but someone with firsthand experience would be able to give you more info. Unless they have changed the noodles, your son may be stuck with rice if you go. Hopefully they change the noodles at some point, DD11 would really love the meal then. I hope you have a great trip. We will be at WDW, the dark side and DCL for 25 days in August and would be happy to report back with answers to specific allergy questions if we can. This community is great for keeping abreast of WDW allergy info.

We haven't eaten there because I had a chef from Tokyo Dining warn us against it but if memory serves correctly, that was DD12's sesame allergy (we have long lists of allergies). From everything I've read, you should have no problems eating there.

The one big reason I hadn't investigated it earlier than I had is that my kids didn't like the type of food (boy has that changed; they LOVE Japanese now). In addition to considering my kids' allergies, I really try not to book ADRs at restaurants where they won't like much on the menu. Will your DS eat the meats cooked with soy sauce? You know he won't eat the veggies or rice. If Fuhnuh is right about the noodles (I have no idea) then he won't even get those. I'm betting nothing has changed since she was there. Just keep the menu in mind. This style of restaurant may be better as something that you and your DH do as date night at home rather than a WDW meal. I dislike centering meal choices around kids' preferences but I do also try to make sure that there's at least SOMETHING for every member of our party on the menu and in big enough portion to fill them up.

How was your experience with Tokyo Dining? Our son has milk and peanut allergies and Tokyo is on our short list for February. We have Teppan Edo on our short list too so will be interested to hear what others experience has been there.

Thanks so much ladies! That's exactly what I needed to know. Too bad about the noodles, but it helps me make my decision about where to dine at Epcot.

clanmccoulough- I totally agree. I think one of the best things you can do to ensure a great dining experience at Disney is to understand the menus where you are going. My DS is a carnivore, so we look for steaks, ribs, pork tenderloin, etc... on the menu. Those types of cuisines usually work well for his allergy set. Add fries and you've got a meal. Everything else is bonus. Thanks again, I always appreciate your feedback on this forum.

DD11 has dairy, egg, peanut, and tree nut allergies. We have been to Tokyo Dining twice and had good experiences. A Chef/manager came out each time and discussed what she could have. I would rate the experience up there with WDW owned TS restaurants. DD11 likes Japanese food, so food choice was easy for us.

The chef warned us that he was concerned for DD12's safety via email prior to us dining there so we didn't end up going. Again, I'm pretty sure it was the sesame which isn't on your list of concerns. The fact that the chef was being as thorough as he was even just via email does give me the confidence to recommend the place. He really "got" allergies.
