Teppan Edo & Tokyo Dining

My family and I have gone to Disey World many many times and always return to the same restaurants we love. In the words of Cogsworth "If its not Baroque, dont fix it"!

For next year, I have decided to stay away from my usuals and try new places. I was reviewing the menus and saw 2 places listed for Epcots Japan, Teppan Edu and Tokyo Dining. I didnt realize there were 2 restaurants to choose from. Is it similar to France's Chef de France and Bistro de Paris, with one being a little more upscale than the other?

Which is generally liked more?

Tapon Edo is a typical hibachi restaurant. It is very good, but not unlike any Banihana's you would go to at home. We have never been to Tokyo dining but we're not sushi people so we wouldn't try it. I'm sure others will chime in.

Is one place sushi? I didnt get a sense for that reading the menus, but then again, I wouldnt really know sushi if it were staring me in the face, except for the seaweed wrapped rice things. Do they put beef and chicken in sushi? Im confused!

Are you reading the menu on Allears? Their menu for Tokyo Dining is only the non-sushi options. The restaurant actually specializes in sushi, but it is on a separate menu that Allears doesn't have on their site. The menu at WDWinfo is a little better; it is a tad confusing because it is all combined, but at least the sushi menu is included.

We have not eaten at Tokyo Dining but we really like Teppan Edo. Like the previous poster said, it is very similar to any Japanese Steakhouse you might find elsewhere. Except....it's Disney!! We love it and it's one of our upcoming reservations. Can't say that I'd be a sushi fan...

At Teppan Edo they cook in front of you on the hibachi grills. Tokyo dining is a regular table service without the grill. The menu at Tokyo dining seems more extensive than the one at Teppan Edo. Both seem to get good reviews. We've only eaten at Teppan Edo and really enjoyed it. If you are traveling with kids, I'd suggest Teppan Edo because of the "entertainment" of them cooking in front of you.

we loved teppan edo...we must of had a good chef because we were surprised how with just salt and pepper the meat and veggies tasted flavorful and seasoned just right.
We do laugh though we were with my brother who is a "75 year old in a 25yr. old body".
You sit in the waiting room where you can see the sushi bar and the poeple in Tokyo Dining. They had a girl demonstrating how they made different sushi on a projector. And my brother looks over at me and my DH with disgust and says "I do see one remote thing I'd be able to eat here...."
He thought that's where we were eating....we laughed and said no we are eating next door where you can have steak. He loved it, thought it was fun and got to talk to a nice grandma next to him.... We liked it, the only reason we aren't eating there this time is we have too many other places we want to eat. Hope this helps...

Teppan Edo has a much more limited menu than you could get at the Benihanas at home. It's good though.

We loved both. I noticed that people are mentioning that Teppan Edo is like Benihana's, which it is. I mean, it is a hibachi restaurant after all! However, note that Tokyo Dining, IMHO, is no different than other Japanese restaurants at my home. I'm blessed to call Ithaca, NY my home while at college and Ithaca is saturated with restaurants- especially Japanese restaurants. I wouldn't think that the food offerings at Tokyo Dining are any different than the Japanese restaurants here (except for a much higher price tag and the absence of sorority girls doing sake bombs ) What is, however, unique about these restaurants is the special touches. Teppan Edo's chefs try to appeal to children moreso because they see children more in their restaurant compared to other hibachi establishments (making Mickey heads out of the food and so on). The restaurant is also beautifully appointed. Tokyo Dining is even MORE beautifully appointed than Teppan Edo. This should be expected though, as both restaurants went through extensive renovations not too long ago. Enjoy! You can't go wrong with either.
