Teppan Edo - Question regarding the "Show"

We love hibachi style Japanese restaurants that cook the food in front of you. My son, who will be 5, during our next trip also LOVES this type of restaurant. In NC a lot of the restaurants will have a "fire" demonstration. Not sure how else to describe it. But, they will put some type of "oil" or something on the grill, light a match, and then there will be fire. This is my son's FAVORITE part of the experience.

When we came to WDW in March, we went to a Japanese restaurant off Disney property and they did not have this as part of the show. My son was disappointed.

So, I am just hoping to be able to level set expectations prior to our October trip.

Does what I am describing occur at Teppan Edo? Thanks!

We never saw the fire thing, but they always seem to do the 'Onion Volcano'.

If you have hibachi restaurants near you that you are quite fond of, might I suggest skipping Tappen? I know people love it, but it all honesty it doesn't come close to the hibachi style restaurants near me. The food is not nearly as good, the show is not nearly as good, the menu is lacking and odds are its more expensive. If you have your hearts set on going, it isn't like the restaurant is awful or anything like that, but with all the other dining options at WDW, I wouldn't settle on a restaurant that you may find disappointing.

I agree with this 110%. When we went to TE the first time we had never been to a Hibachi restaurant so we thought it was good. When we came home we tried our local one and it blew TE out of the water. Food, price, show and service were 10times better at home then at TE. Wait for our table was forever. I mean we waited over an hour. No fire and only steam from the onion volcano.

I agree with PP regarding TE. We also live in NC and the hibachi style restaurants include soup, salad, shrimp appetizer and fried rice. At TE fried rice isn't an option and every thing else is not included with the entree.

TE isn't a bad restaurant but odds are your local places are better and not as expensive.

Do what you want. So what if you have tappenyaki restaurants near you. You'll be in Disney not at home and if you want to see the onion volcano in Disney, do it!.
We have one less than 2 miles from our house and we always like to go to TE at least once a trip.
The food is good, they do put on a show, and it's in WDW. BTW, they do give you the clear soup before the entree's.

I've been to Teppan Edo twice and I've never seen the fire.

As a side note, someone please explain to me the allure of Teppan Edo and other similar Japanese restaurants. I just don't get it. My kids, dh and dh's parents consider Teppan Edo a "must do," but I'd really rather eat a CS than be stuck in Teppan Edo for an hour. What am I missing?

I have had the exact opposite experience. Teppan Edo blows our local restaurant out of the water. The service is far better and the food is too. By the way, Fried Rice is an Americanized Chinese dish, it is not Japanese. You should not expect it in an authentic Japanese restaurant.
It just goes to show that everyone is different.

To the OP, they do not do the fire experience you refer to, but they do have the onion volcano
Have a Great Trip

I don't recall that we got soup at Teppan Edo ... that was listed as an appetizer and you had to pay for it if you were getting your meal with the DDP.

I do agree with others ... it is a wonderful restaurant, but we have gotten more for the money at local habachi restaurants. If it is between going to Teppan Edo and trying another WDW TS restaurant that you have been wanting to try, I'd skip Teppan Edo.

While good (we are going in Sept for the 3rd time), there may be others that you haven't tried and would like to that would provide a different dining experience than what you have at home.

We enjoy the restaurant. We were there in Dec and will be again in June. No longer have the salad or soup as part of the meal...can be added but extra expense. Always do the volcano and sometimes the "Cho Cho train" - will draw on the grill with their oil, but I have never seen the fire either. The steamed rice is "unlimited" - which we didn't know about until a few years ago.

We love TE. Have been there many times, as well as the local "hibachi" style. Like any of the other WS retaurants, local may be cheaper, but the experience in our opinion is worth it. There is always some "fire" show, volcano, etc. One note from us, Teppan Edo is by far closer to the true Japanese we had in Japan. Fried rice is a U.S. addition, the steamed is traditional. The Japanese CM'x are soooo good with the little ones, I do not hesitate to continue this restaurant as our family first night tradition.

Thanks everyone for your responses. My DS who will be 5 when we go to Disney loves Hibachi style restaurants. So, even if the food is just "okay" the experience for both of our children is well worth it to us. We have a few "stabple" places that we love to visit during each of our trips and then venture to new places during our trip as well. It's always fun for us to watch the excitement of Disney through the eyes of our small children! I hope that they will realize one day how blessed they are to have been to Disney so many times during their childhood.

Thanks again for the feedback.

We always eat at Teppan Edo and love it, we love the ones at home too.

What I really wanted to say was the shopping in the Japanese pavillion is awesome. It has always been my kids fav place to shop. They are teens now and still love it but when they were young and in the Pokemon craze and Hello Kitty craze they thought they were in heaven. It can be very busy there. It is fun to do or just watch the Pick a Pearl area too. So whether you eat in the restaurant or not, it is a very nice country to visit. Drum demo good too!
