Teppan Edo or 50's PTC

We are leaving in o.....12 days
I already have Teppan Edo booked for our party for dinner one night, but now we are all thinking of maybe switching to a late lunch @ 50's PTC. WWYD? We ate @ 50's PTC YEARS ago! And I've never eaten @ Teppan Edo and never had Habachi before (yes I must live under a rock, but DD's has food allergies so we don't eat out all that much). We have 4 kids ranging in ages 2-8 and the rest are adults, my sister is the big Habachi lover so I think she'd be disappointed if we didn't do it.
So WWYD?

I think I'll be in the minority, but I don't think there's anything special about Teppan Edo. It's just like every other hibachi restaurant.

I love the food and atmosphere at 50's PTC. It's a lot of fun if you play along with your server.

If I were you, I'd tell my sister that we can hit the hibachi place at home some time soon, and that you're heading to 50's PTC!

We did Teppan-Edo for the first time this last trip. Its no fancier than any other good hibachi grill...that being said I prefer it over the 50's PTC.

Teppan-Edo would also be good for kids.

Which park will you be in? I'd base my decision on that because IMO no ADR is worth travelling from one park to another.

Both have great reputations for food allergies, though Teppan Edo may be extremely limited in safe desserts (they have none my kids can eat). For our own food allergies, we LOVE 50s PTC because for my kids to get fried chicken I have to make it and let me tell you, that's a huge undertaking. Add in the milk shakes and we're in HEAVEN I tell ya! (can't have milk or gluten) My kids aren't into the types of foods served at hibachi restaurants and would want to order sushi but the sushi there isn't safe for one of my kids (sushi rice in Japan pavillion has gluten) so we won't go to Teppan Edo (we tried Tokyo Dining one time but got an email from a chef with concern for our safety with our unique long list of allergies; it does show you that the chef gets it though).

What kind of allergies are you talking about?

He is so sensitive (we discovered on this trip ) that he reacted to just walking by the buffet at Cape May dinner, from the steaming of the crab legs at the buffet. I wasn't aware that they did that right there at the buffet, and I felt so bad for him. However, the manager was wonderful, we got right out of there and she made other dining arrangements for us at a different restaurant.

Anyway, we loved 50s PT!! The food was delicious, my boys loved it, service was great and it was so much fun! DH got caught putting his elbows on the table and I got caught talking to DH with some food in my mouth! Our boys (they're 3 and 5) loved it that Mommy & Daddy got in trouble!!

As for myself, I'm scared to ever bring my son to a hibachi restaurant again, as I know they cook shellfish in front of you for other people at the table, given his reaction at Cape May. In the past he only had a reaction from ingesting it, and he was tested at the allergist but this was the first time experiencing such a sensitivity.

Teppan Edo is a hibachi restaurant and many people love it...but hibachi places are available at home for many people too. 50s PT is very unique and a lot of fun!

Bonnie, so sorry your little one had a reaction to the steamed shellfish! Poor little guy, must be so sensitive!

DD has a peanut allergy, I keep her away from tree nuts too just to be safe. Was just worried about the milkshakes @ 50's PTC b/c don't they have a PB one? And honestly, if it was just the 3 of us none of us would even order the milkshakes, but if she sees someone else with it then she'll probably want one too.

decisions...decisions..would they be able ot have 11 of us @ 1 table or would they split us? If thats the case maybe I'll make 2 separate ressies.


OOO and heres the kicker, we are having breakfast @ Tusker House so the morning will be @ AK, the original plan was morning @ AK, break then epcot for teppan edo and hit the park. Now it appears it may change to no break and just head back to hotel a little earlier b/c they close early anyway.
I just wonder if our kids will get "upset" if they or us get "yelled" at

Oh, and at Prime Time- they have my FAVORITE Dessert...the Smores dessert! Desserts at Prime Time are way better... Teppan Edo is just okay..but you can always grab a sweet treat later on somewhere else in the world!

Yes, the smores dessert is great at 50s PT!!! DH and I shared it and it was delicious! Also, lighter than most restaurant desserts which was a nice treat!

If the desserts are not so great at Teppan Edo, then the bakery in France is wonderful!!!!!! As is the bakery in Norway!!

50's PTC. Never tried Teppan Edo but we can't get enough of 50's prime time. Everything we have tried is absoloutely delicious and we always make a visit there. We have many restraunts similiar to Teppan Edo in the area (within hour and half drive) we have nothing that has anything close to PT's fried chicken, chicken pot pie, and PBJ shakes!

I made the ressies for 50's PTC for the 11 of us, 6 and 5...wonder if they'd be able to put us together upon arrival? They are for 2:50 and 2:55

I kept the Teppan Edo and I am going to call my mom and aunt tonight to figure out what we are doing and whatever we don't want, I'll cancel tonight or in the AM.

I truly don't think 50s PTC is all it's cracked up to be. The food is good, I guess (not outstanding or unforgettable, but good enough that we ate well and had no complaints), but the atmosphere is really not - in my opinion - all it's cracked up to be.

On the other hand, Teppan Edo is a really fun experience. The food is good and my dh, inlaws and both of my kids absolutely LOVED it and consider it a "must do."

Sure, there are hibachi restaurants outside of WDW, but - especially considering you've never done one - I'd strongly encourage you to do Teppan Edo if you have to make a choice between the two.

We eat hibachi at least once every month or two at home. We love Tappan Edo, but would probably pick 50s for the unique atmosphere since we can't get it at home, and like the food there too.
But like everyone else, I would base it on which park you're already at.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Teppan Edo only fit 8 per grill/table? I believe that you'll be split up into 2 groups.

At 50s PTC you should be able to request to be in the same "room" (the restaurant is broken up into a bunch of small areas with 4 or 5 tables per area and you can definitely interact between tables) when you arrive. Expect to wait longer than you'd normally have to wait but I'm sure they'll try to accomodate you.

If you're comfortable with Tusker House with peanut allergies then I don't see any problems at 50s PTC. My daughters can't have milk yet they can safely have milkshakes there. The chefs really do understand about allergies and cross contamination. The only thing I'm not sure about is if they'll give you a milkshake made from regular ice cream and milk since the allergy milk shake machine may be dedicated to non-dairy products. The chef who comes to your table is the person who will know for sure. You can always ask the Special Diets department via email and they'll check with a chef who will let you know for sure one way or the other so you'll know ahead of time whether or not to tell your daughter about the shakes.

You won't like my opinion on this but I don't think you should go anywhere away from your hotel this evening. AK is a very tiring park and if you're planning to stay there until mid-late afternoon then you'll all be exhausted and sweaty and you won't want to head to another park to go get dinner.

I would say from the 2 choices...... Teppan Edo! We had a pretty good experience there. 50's was just "meh" for us. If you'll be at AK all day.... you may want to consider Yak n Yeti, or if you want to park hop... Mama Melrose takes big parties forsure... or Nine Dragons.
