Hi guys. We're going in September to WDW and have most of our ADR's made. However, we've always wanted to go to Teppan Edo in Japan in Epcot, but have stayed away since I developed a shellfish allergy a few years ago. I know you're not at a table alone, and therefore probably would have to worry about cross contamination if anyone else at that table ordered shellfish. Has anyone ever eaten there who's allergic to shrimp? I'm curious how they deal with it, or is it just one of those places I'll never be able to eat?

I'm allergic to shrimp- what they did was cook my food before anyone elses so there was no cross contamination. I had no problems at all. But that doesn't mean you might not have a problem. Don't know.... maybe you can ask you Dr. if cooking this way would be ok?

I think it also depends on how severe your allergy is. I am allergic to peanuts, eggs and shellfish but my shellfish allergy is a very mild allergy. I only have a problem if I actually eat shellfish and even then it is a mild reaction. We ate there in December and had no problems. My allergist said that there was absolutely no problem with eating there.

If it is a severe allergy and if cross contamination is an issues I would definitley check with your doctor. It depends greatly on how allergic adn how sensitive you are. But for an allergy that is only a problem if you actually eat it, I don't think there would be a problem.

It's fine to eat there. Just call ahead to Teppan Edo and make them aware of your allergy. Like kare said, they will prepare your meal first. However, they clean and sterilize the hibachi so there is no cross contamination. If you are concerned, you could call and ask them specifically about your situation.

Thanks, everyone. This makes me feel better. Maybe we will add Teppan Edo to our ressies.

1) This sounds good.
2) But, it is not a valid statement.
3) The grills are porous and cannot be "cleaned", and
. . . are not cleaned after use
. . . are not sanitized before use
. . . they are scraped down and rubbed/treated ONLY with oil
4) For severe allergies, there definitely is contamination.
5) If you have severe allergies, they will make the dish in the kitchen.
6) They WILL NOT make on the grill in front of you.

NOTE: We have interest in two restaurants
. . . they know allergy-prep issues
. . . they would never use non-sanitized grills for allergies
. . . they have one grill that does not see eggs, shellfish or nuts
. . . they use this one for allergy dishes

Yep, my food is made back in the kitchen. However, someone with less severe allergies at the table had theirs cooked before the other dishes.

Be sure to talk to a manager when you get there. They are very knowledgeable about allergy issues.
