I'm planning a solo trip to WDW in mid-September for my birthday. :woohoo: Could somebody please tell me if I'm completely out of my mind to entertain the idea of tenting during peak hurricane season?

Thanks.

nah, I don't think you are out of your mind! :) We were told by a friend who is a Fl resident (and a fellow Disfreak) that if you tent camp and a hurricane comes that you are put in a resort! Of course, it would probably be wishful thinking to hope for the GF! :)

I live in FL, and wouldn't think twice about tent camping at that time. We don't get hurricanes a lot (we got hit in 2004 hard during Charlie). We've had worse weather on Christmas Day and then Groundhog day this past year - tornadoes and such in Central Florida.

We were there during Hurricane Charley, and everyone from FW was sent to different resorts. WDW handled everything so well.

I had heard the same story on the campers being moved. I was told most were sent to Wilderness Lodge. Wouldn't have hurt my feelings lol.

I suppose if I HAD to, I could slum it at Wilderness Lodge! :woohoo:

Really, I wouldn't sweat the hurricanes at all. Disney does such a great job of planning for the worst, that if it even happens (which is rare), they are on the ball very quickly and efficiently. Being a Floridian with 3 of the last 5 hurricanes hitting is directly, they plan MUCH better than everyone else does! Best of luck and have a great time during the "windy" season!

Nope, you're not out of your mind!! We've camped in tents at FW 3 times in September. The last trip in September was perfection! Just keep in mind a hurricane could happen, but if it does, it seems like Walt Disney World is the place to be. I've read that Floridians who are told to evacuate on the coasts like to go to a Disney Resort because they don't have the problems of taking a week to get electricity back on in Disney (have underground cables, etc).

You are exactly right. I went up there when I had 26 days without electricity in Frances in '04. (FPL said I wasn't a priority because the paper tree fell on my access line, go figure) We would go on weekends to get away from the heat. I only wish we had our RV then and not a pop up! Disney has their own utilities and can get them up and running in no time.

When Disney evacuates FW, they don't always put you in a room at another resort. I know of at least one time FW evacuees were put in the convention center at CR. It would be safe, but not as comfortable as a room. I guess it probably depends on how busy the resorts are at the time of the storm.

Last year a friend of mine was put in Carribbean Beach for the night b/c all the debris had not been cleaned from the storm. The next night they were allowed to take their camper to FW. They were not charged anything extra for staying at CB.

During Floyd (which turned into a non-event) they moved everyone from the campground to the CR Convention Center, and then after the threat of the storm had passed they let them all move back to the campground IIR. The only people who were given rooms during that event were those with special needs.

I think it really depends on how many people they need to accomodate. You won't be expected (or allowed) to stay at Fort Wilderness during a storm.
