Tent Camping in December

Hubby wants to tent camp in December, I think he is looking at December 12- 17. What is the weather like around that time in December? A big Thank You for any help

The weather varies in Dec. , one year we went and is was above 80 all week and the kids were in the pool every day, the next year is was in the high 60's and 70's and rained almost every day a little bit fo 10 days. Having said that we now like to go that time of year.

I have tent camped in mid January every year for years, here in SC. You can safely heat a large tent and be comfortable. It has become a sport for me...this year we had a night with a low temp of 26 degrees.

Inside temp - 74!

I used one of the round kerosene heaters on full blast and a small electric heater that had a thermostat to fine tune the temps!

You can do it if, I repeat if...you have a tent tall enough that the heat disipates before melting the roof. Smaller tents, I would recommend electric radiant heaters.

Be sure to put a carpet on the floor, both for comfort and safety. Be safe, test the rig out in advance when you arent depending on it to be asleep in.

Generally tents leak enough air so that CO isnt a problem, but a detector is a great idea. I had to block about 90% of my roof screen vent area to hold in heat.

I live an hour away from Orlando... never camped at Disney but we camp out a lot in other locations a short drive from Orlando.


Dec is usually not bad at all. If you're from up north, it's generally downright mild like late summer to late fall would be in cooler climates.

You never know if you're going to be able to go swimming or if you'll have to get a jacket. Could be both in one day-- seems no matter how cool mornings and evenings are, a heat wave in mid-afternoon is common.

We usually sleep w/shorts & t-shirt, and a layer of sweats over that. And socks. If it starts to get warm, we peel off a layer and put it up by our pillow. If it starts to get cool, we wiggle into it again sometime during the night.

Everyone has their own sleeping bag but we bring a couple of extra big comforters just in case. The 3 kids share one queen sized air mattress, and DH and I share another. Usually the body heat alone is enough to keep us warm.

I much rather camp out in Nov/Dec or March than summer here!

We were at FW the first 3 weeks of Dec last year and the temps were just wacky. The first week was quite cool, with daytime temps in the 60s/low 70s and a couple of evenings in the 40s and below (incl. the night we went too MVMCP - BRRRR)

It got much closer to what we've experienced in past trips the next 2 weeks - days in the 70s-low 80s, evenings in the 50s-60s.

Good thing about this time of year is that it's generally pretty dry. In 3 weeks we had all of 2 days of rain - one the Sunday we checked in. The other day the sun was back out by 3pm.

I used to tent camp at Disney in December all the time. Some years it was quite balmy, I've also had a couple of years where the nights got in the 30's.

I'm still leary of any kind of heater in tents, so I used an electric mattress pad and an electric blanket on my air mattress and was quite cozy. (Also had a tent big enough to put a portable toilet inside the tent so I didn't have to go out in the middle of the night).

Even though it can be cold, it is still Florida and still humid, so during the day, you need to open those windows and run a fan to dry things out. Cold and damp are a miserable combination and you will NEVER get warm!!
