Has anyone had any problems using a temporary ID (renewed my drivers licence) at airline check in seeing as it is not really a photo ID, just the piece of papar they give you.

The rep at the DMV suggested I call the airline to see if it was OK. As I type this just remembered I do have a passport. Any thoughts or pass experiences. Thanks

They didn't staple your old license to the renewal form? In MI, they clip the corner off your license and then staple them together so you still have a govt issued photo ID.

You do not need a government issued ID to fly; that is a fallacy. My FIL has flown several times recently with NO ID. IL revoked and confiscated his license (clerical errors). He has no passport. He has had zero problems; he was not even subjected to secondary screening. (Probably lucky but he is 78 years old.) Just be sure you are familiar with the requirements on the TSA site. You'll be fine...

Here in Texas the cut the whole top part of the ID off that has Texas on it. She said that would make it invalid to use. The temporary licence is printed out on a full sheet of paper, she said I could fold it as needed but would be invalid it I cut or ripped the paper in any way.

In 2009 went we went to WDW I had temp. license because Nebraska was changing over to their new system and even though it had been over a month since I renewed they were still behind! :sad2: The DMV assured me I would have no troubles at the airport. :rolleyes1 I took my passport along just in case.

We flew out of Kansas City and I handed the TSA lady the temp. ID and she actually laughed at me and handed it back and said NO! I gave her my passport and told her I figured there's be a problem and told her what the DMV had said. She just laughed again and said no a paper that looks like a photocopy would not be valid for air travel!

So take your passport to be safe! :thumbsup2

I will have passport in hand. This is the statement from United airline site:

Check-in information
Please note that valid, government-issued photo identification must be presented at airport.

Thanks all:grouphug:

That's the airline's requirement - as PPs indicated TSA will allow you to fly without ID. Interesting side note . . . of all the recommendations that 9/11 commission made (such as reinforced doors to the cockpit) the airline fought implementation of all of them except one. That one was the ID requirement . . . which does little to improve security but prevents you from selling a "non-refundable" ticket.

I have used the one I got from the State of Texas, but that was a long time ago. Can't remember if it was spring of 2001 or 2002.

Since you have a passport it's easier to just use that.

I lost my Driver's Lisence last time I went to Florida. My wife emailed me a scan of it that we had saved on the computer. I printed out a giant copy of it (8.5 x 11) and used it to get through airport security. I mean come on..it looked SO FAKE it was huge. They accepted it without question. . . Strange.

Probably because ID does not equal security.

My DH has used his temporary driver's license to travel several times and never had a problem. Our temporary IDs are also just a piece of paper, but it they have our pictures on them. He took his expired license as backup, but they never asked to see it.

The DMV nor the airline are the authority here.

However, you can fly without a photo ID. Be prepared to be searched and arrive early. I have had to do it after I lost my wallet. I survied the process.
