Hi everyone we're booked for September 2013 for 1 week off site villa and 2 weeks OKW resort to celebrate my 40th. We're so excited as we haven't been able to get there for 4 years and so have complete withdrawel symptoms.
Only my hubby and I know about it so far as we are planning to tell the kids at Christmas (partly to save money the news will be as a pressie and also a great time to tell them). Our DD will be 9 and DS 7.
We've got a few plans on how we could tell them:
-Disney helium balloon in a box
- t-shirts 'saying we're going to Disney'
- postcard/invite from Mickey
- count down calendar
- hopefully I'll complete their scrapbook albums that we brought on our last trip.
I've also read on here about people that have made their own DVDs which I think is a fab idea and I can imagine the kids putting it on and watching their jaws drop. I've had a quick look but can't seem to find any to look any. If anyone would kindly send me a link to have a look at theirs for inspiration I wold be really grateful. Also any other ideas would be great.
Thanks all Catherine x

I would watch some videos on YouTube. There are a ton! I notice the balloons in the box does work vey well the tend to get stuck.

My favorites were when a sister promised to take her little sis and on here 18th birthday wrote her seven or eight letters saying how wonderful she is and the first word of each letter said basically we are going to Disney world. The other is lily's reaction. There is one where the flight attendants passed out shirts wand ears and stuff.

Personally my dh and decided that we are not telling them and just getting in line for the dme.

Hi Mummycat,
We were not going this year, but after a chat with the good lady wife we decided to book something a couple of weeks ago...
So at the moment only the wife and I know...
On Sunday it is the wife's birthday and on birthdays we always have a game of pass the parcel.. (I never win.. :rotfl2:). Well on Sunday my daughter and son will win jointly and it will be a dvd. Below is a link to the DVD.
The DVD shows lots of pictures from all the visits they have enjoyed to Florida, at the end it shows both my kids asleep. If you wait about 5 secs, it then kicks back in again with a message. We will then give my daughter a letter from Mickey that says they have been good at school & nursery this year and asking them if they would like to go back to see him in Magic Kingdom. :rotfl2:

Then they will press play and hopefully the rest is self explanatory... with all the plans that they will be going to Disney in 15 days time... Hope it goes to plan as we have never done this kind of thing before...

The video is here.... Hopefully it may give you some idea's....

Wow your video was amazing and def brought a Disney tear to my eye. Food for thought and something to present to my husband (knows a lot more about IT then me!) to ask for something similar.
Wishing you guys a magical and relaxing trip and thanks again for sharing xx

i'm in the middle of making a video for my boys we're going 12 Dec
how did you manage to get the disney logo trailer at the beginning ?

I made a video too!

We're going this October and we'll be getting the kids up for school as usual in the morning, then there'll be a phone call from the 'school' (My partner will ring the house) apparently telling us there's an electrical fault at the school so it won't be opening until later.

So I'll tell them to go and get their uniforms off and suggest we watch a DVD...

Then they'll watch this!! (the first half is meant to look like adverts for stuff we're doing like a normal Disney DVD, then at around 11 minutes in it 'breaks' and there's an emergency announcement! Skip to 11 minutes if you just want to see that bit)

I used to mess around with some software and do them myself, but then I found a website that made life much easier. I will send you a message with a link to the company.

I think telling them at Christmas is a great idea. We told our kids that we had something to tell them....we are going to Disney in two weeks (it was a last minute planned trip to see the Christmas decorations)... and we videotaped it. They screamed with excitement, it is so fun to watch that video!

I only wanted to point out that I don't understand people that don't tell their kids until they "show up" in Florida. I LOVE the anticipation of going to Disney, its part of the excitement of Disney to look forward to it. Why take that away from them? Happy planning!

It was the kids third trip to Disney that we decided not to tell them, because on the second trip countdown they knew about it from the day we booked it, and all we had for 300 days was "How many sleeps, how many sleeps" They talked and talked and planned every tiny detail from food to rides to who was going to sit where on what roller coaster, for the last few weeks they hardly slept, so by the time we got to Disney we were all EXHAUSTED. Not telling them on our third trip worked well because they had slept well, hadn't pre planned to the enth degree, they were fresh and ready for their holiday.
Now they're a lot older and can cope with excitement better, so its different.
We all know our own kids and know what works for them. Some just would not be able to cope with such a last minute surprise but for some its a memory of a lifetime and something they will talk about for a lifetime:goodvibes

That's what we thought too. It is great if everyone is planning, but If they've been before and will go again it's not a big deal if they miss the planning on one holiday, the amazing surprise more than makes up for that, and don't forget we have a 9 hour flight where the kids can plan things, 3 hours in the airport, how ever many hours driving to the airport etc

We'll be making our children packs where they can find out everything we will be doing while they're on the plane, leaving a few things blank so they can decide some things too :)

Thanks for that madmumof2 (I feel that way too!) another great video and I love the music. Feel really excited for you just watching it and I can imagine how the kids will react- hope you can get that on video too!
I've shown the hubby now and told him to start thinking about it- I shall be taking on the guest director role and offering lots of helpful suggestions (ha ha) xx

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I can see the logic in both ways of telling the kids- avoiding the 'how many days now' question is certainly tempting. For us though we're looking forward to the build up as a family as its been a while since we went to our happy place and as I said before its going to make a brilliant Christmas.
We definitely plan on taping their reactions as I think it will be priceless.
Happy planning to you all and enjoy the moment as their little faces light up however you choose to do it
Thanks again Catherine x
