Telling kids about the trip!

1st trip to WDW 11/13-11/19/05. DH, DD 10, DS 7 - I'm looking for a creative and fun way to surprise them (the Kids) with the news. Any ideas?

How about writing them a letter from your kids favorite character saying that they cant wait to see them and that theyll have so much fun etc... and at breakfast before your leave or what ever meal before you leave say you got these in the mail and you dont know who they are from....

unless you dont want to wait to tell them till right before you leave...

you could also set up a savenger hunt for them with little disney things and they have to piece together the clues.....

or...

make a little count down closer you get to the trip kinda like an advent calender... and give them disney dollars or autograph book or a disposable camera something they can use on the trip...

I hope that helps a little in your search for a creative way to tell them

JCTigger - I have been thinking about the advent calendar idea too. Any suggestions on how to do this? We are leaving March 2 and I want to get the calendar started and sadly am not too creative. Thanks.

Hi I am surprising mine also they are 9 and 7 and i am buying them each ( cause they cant share) one of the kids guides to WDW and copies of ressies. This is their Bday gift they just cant go for 4 months afterwards, but thats 4 months of helping us plan the trip!!

My kids (ds14,dd11,ds10) thought they were going to the orthodontist. We packed their bags and put them in the trunk. They didn't know until they saw the planes landing at the airport. They were surprised.

I read a great idea here on DIS. Order a Disney cake from your local supermarket and instead of "Happy Birthday" have them write "The DKx3 Family is going to Disney World".

For a count down calendar how about printing out a picture of the castle or Mickey and cutting it up into the number of days you have then paste it back together a piece every night. OR a paper chain you remove the link from every night- you could write some fun thing you're going to do there on the strips for the chain.

I found a web site with a "how to make a christmas advent calander" but all you need to do is get rid of christmas and add disney stuff to it

Box Advent Calendar

Materials Christmas fabric, card board, 24 match boxes, foil, string

Decide how large your calendar will be. You will need an area about 3 foot square for the boxes. To get an exact size, lay out five boxes in a row.

Allow enough space in between for each box to be opened. Measure for the width of your calendar and add about 2 inches on each side. For the height, put five boxes in a column with about an inch separating each box. Measure the height and add 2 inches for the top and bottom.

Cut out the cardboard in the finished size of the calendar. Then cut out the fabric 1 inch larger.

Glue the fabric to the cardboard and wrap the edges over so that none of the cardboard shows.

Cut out 25 foil rectangles the width of each match box and long enough to go all the way around the match box. Glue the foil to the match box. Make sure that you can still open each match box.

Glue the boxes on the calendar in 5 rows of 5.

Fill the boxes with candy, coins, or notes.

This activity will take an afternoon to make, but you will be able to use it for years to come.

I hope if you make this it comes out well... im not totally crafty as well unless i have a pattern to go by... so good luck

My parents suprised me too a year and a half ago. They woke me and my three siblings up at four in the morning and said we were going now and to hurry up and pack my bags, it was so awesome and little kids love it when they get to get out of bed in the middle of the night, lol. My parents also suprised another time, saying that we were going camping and then taking us to the airport where they handed us each our minnie ears and said SUPRISE!!! It was so awesome! Also may I suggest telling your kids your going for say 5 days when really you're going for 7 that way on the last day you can suprise with an extra two days. My parents did that on our first trip, we were supose to be going for 9 but instead we went for 11!!! It was so so awesome the best memory I have. Anyway, good luck and have fun!

We surprised our kids (ages 8,9,12,13) for Christmas. We took a big posterboard and wrote in big print the date we are going to WDW. We then cut it into a puzzle and put the pieces into presents. We also made a video using the kids disney stuffed animals to do a puppet show with "tigger, mickey and woody" explaining to the kids where they were going. So, after they had all the puzzle pieces and put the puzzle together they were totally confused and thought the date meant they were getting a dog (something they desperately want) on that date. Sorry no dog kids. So we put in the video we made and 4 jaws simultaneously hit the floor! It was the best!
Whatever you decide to do just have fun with and it's something your kids will probably always remember.

When we went in 2001, it was a birthday present trip for our dd (we had never been, and it just happened to fall near her birthday). So, I set up a treasure hunt for her, at each stop she found a disney clue. At the end, she found a suitcase filled with disney vacation stuff (disney dollars, mouse ears, etc..).

This year, we wanted to tell her sooner so that she could save money and stuff. She was anticipating us going back to the Outerbanks, NC. So, one sunday morning, we had gone out to eat for breakfast and told her that I had made reservations (very 'no big deal'). I then told her that I wasn't able to get the regular hotel, she looked so disapointed and said, "Well, where are we going to have to stay." So I just said, "Oh, Animal Kingdom Lodge" It took a minute for it to sink in, the she was dancing around (in her seat) having a blast.

We really wanted to surpise our son (7yo) but I have such a hard time keeping secrets to myself. We told him that this year for vacation we are going to Colorado Springs (we live in Denver - only an hour drive). Poor guy is really bummed he wanted to go to WDW I figured this way when I start packing my bags, getting things ready to go he won't question why I am packing suitcases and all the other fun vacation prep work. When we wake him up at 4am that morning he will think we are still going to Colorado Springs until he sees or hears "Orlando"
