Since it seems we are all trying to get to know each other a little better, tell me about your first time camping. I'll start...

My first camping memory must have been when I was about six. Went to Myrtle Beach and stayed at Ocean Lakes in a travel trailer. We took friends and I remember I slept on the floor in front of the stove. Think I got sunburned and remember my brother who is 2 years older "walking" the septic hose. Ahhhh, good times!

I think I was maybe 6 when Dad brought home an old pickup camper. As soon as mom could get it cleaned, we headed out to a near by state park. It stormed like crazy but we had a great time. Been a camping nut since :goodvibes

My DH and I rented a "camp" at a state park...it contained a campsite, army-type tent and a couple cots and a lantern. We did this for 2 nights...we survived the first night. Second night came and a huge amount of rain came and started dripping from the top of the tent. We tried to stop it but nothing helped!

It was my DH's decision to leave so we left at 2am in our pj's and our toiletry bag. Had to come back the next morning for all of our belongings and it was a good thing we left the night before because everything was soaked!

Shortly after that DH vowed to never tent camp again and we ended up with our first camper. :rotfl2:

I was three years old. We lived in upstate NY at the time and my father's campground of choice was by Lake George in the middle of nowhere: no comfort stations, no supply stores, no neighbors, not even a porta-potty (except for the one we brought). We camped in an old canvas tent complete with wooden support poles close to the water so we could launch our boat and my brothers could water-ski or fish. The only things I really remember is looking for tiny crayfish in the rocks along the shore and waking up one morning with black rings around my nostrils because the kerosene lantern blew out during the night (Mom was not happy about that little incident). Not convenient, definitely rustic, but it was a lot of fun and taught me to love the outdoors.

I don't remember my first one, but I'm sure it was with the Boy Scouts. I was probably 10. Not long after that my parents decided on a family camping vacations to Bull Shoals Lake in N. Arkansas. HOT! but had the lake. Did that for a few years, then I was old enough to go out with just my older brother. We have backpacked all over Missouri and Illinois. Something neat about; if you didn't carry it in, you didn't have it.

In scouts we camped 12 months a year, and this was around St Louis where it gets COLD in the winter.

The first camping experience I can remember is at the Fort. My Grandparents rented a Airstream camper from the Fort. This was apparently the original cabin rentals.I cant remember going to the M/K but we did swim at River Country and ride the train around the camp ground.

My first camping trip was with my family when I was 6 or 7.

My parents bought a Volkswagen bus that was outfitted for camping and we went to a mountain lake in California.

I am not sure what made my prissy, exacting father think he was camping material. It was not the triumph he had pictured in his mind.:rotfl2: But we all survived.

I later went on to camp with the scouts, backpacking, tent camping, more VW vanagon camping, then finally moved up to the luxury of trailer camping.

I am blessed to have married a camping fella, but neither of the kids (now grown with kids of their own) are camping folk...

Oh, well...

Cathy

My earliest recall was over night fish/camping with my dad and siblings. We lived in Ohio, my dad loved to fish, he picked us up after his work onna weekend and we'd head to the banks of Big Darby creek for some overnight fishing.
We'd fish til it got dark, he would build a fire from wood found in the woods, we'd roast hotdogs etc.for supper. Back then we didn't care much bout what was in bug spray and we used it very liberally,AND IT WORKED TOO !
We couldn't afford nice things like SLEEPING BAGS,,so we's bring blankets from home and hit the hard ground for the night.
Dad was always first up in the morning with his coffee brewing and the skillet fry'n breakfast.
We'd eat breakfast, fish the first part of the morning then head home.

My worst, first, experience about camping was learn'n to wipe in the woods,WHERE THERE WAS NO POTTY OR TOILET PAPER !!!
