tell me what you did for your dd's sweet 16 birthday party???

to me it seems crazy to throw away that much money on something that will last a few hours and then be gone forever

Normally, I would agree with that which is why i didnt even ask for a sweet 16

BUT, the difference with my bat mitzvah (and a lot of otehr families we know) is that my paretns adn gradnparenst put money away when I was born for my bat mitzvah. The account began with $25,000 and they added to it each year. It got to a littel over $40,000 I think. If we hadnt had that account, we never would have spent so much on the party.

I don't know anyone that had a Sweet Sixteen party. I think I got my license and that may have been the year my parents bought my F-series Loree oboe. (That is a orchestra, professional brand, expensive...even when used, oboe) So I didn't miss anything here.

My son is an oboeist. The F serier Loree is a gorgeous instrument and just as costly as some of these extravant parties or in some cases- a small used car. (most people have no idea how much oboes and supplies really cost!)

OMG...I DO!!!! lol.
I played oboe in high school bu ti knew i wasnt going to play after high school so we only spent about $3000 on my oboe. BUT, my friend and oboemate in high school is majoring in music performance in college and she got a Loree her junior year and when she otld me what it cost i would have sworn I had a heart attack.
She still has that one but in her sophmore year of high school she got ANOTHER Loree so now she has 2!!!

Wow you guys really went all out, I feel jipped lol.

i was thinking the same thing. i don't even remember what my parents did (or didn't do) for me when i turned 16? since i'm a july baby and both my brother and i were so heavily involved in sports, i'm fairly certain one or both of us were involved in an All-Star baseball/softball tournie somewhere??? but there is NO WAY my parents could have afforded nor would they have given me a party costing thousands of dollars. WOW!!!

:eek::eek::eek:

Wow - I've heard about the TV show but I didn't realize that people actually did big parties for their kids' 16th birthday parties in real life! And it's just for girls and not boys? Interesting!

I have 2 young girls, I'm going to have to ask around and get the scoop on what folks around here do. I need to start managing my 8yo's expectation LOL!

All I remember from my 16th birthday was getting pizza and a drivers license and that was pretty darn exciting to me at the time.

For my sweet 16 my mom got a hotel suite (it was like 195 dollars) it had a seperate bedroom (she slept in) and room with a bed and pull out couch where me and 3 friends stayed...we brought pizza and cake and in the morning we brought a toaster and made bagels and such they were good! We swam at the pool and sat in the hot tub, and watched disney channel (yes at 16!) and it was a great party

For my daughter's Sweet 16, I flew her best friend from Chicago (we're in Phila) as a surprise to join us in Disney World. Her friend arrived at Orlando airport 1 hour before us. As we were walking towards the baggage claim, her friend came up behind her and tapped her on the shoulder. Screams and hugs ensued. I made up t-shirts that said "Sweet 16" and "Sweet 16 present" and the girls walked around the parks with pink feather boas and had a ball!
It cost under $1,000.00 for her friend to come as a surprise because we were going anyway.
I'd post a picture but I don't know how :(

LOL, it's funny to see this thread come back! DD's 16th bday is TOMORROW! Ahhh, I'm having such pangs about her turning 16. I remember looking at her as a baby, thinking one day she'd be turning 16 the same year I turn 40. A few blinks of an eye and here we are. :scared1:

For her party, she had 10 friends over for a Chinese buffet dinner & sleepover. She is big into decorating so we searched for the perfect plates - she wanted pink & orange & paisley  . Thankfully we found some cute aqua polka dot & paisley plates that she loved & had paper lanterns as part of her decorations.

We also found pink polka dot take out boxes that they decorated w/their name in foam letters & glitter paint. They really liked this as everyone showed then later filled them w/a candy buffet. They played a few games & watched movies til 5am. Then had bacon, sweet rolls & fruit for breakfast. Really not very different from any other sleepover but they seemed to have a good time.

Tonight she wanted to go to Olive Garden for dinner and first thing tomorrow we are going to get her license! Tomorrow night will be homemade cake, leftovers & presents. My dad is giving us his old Toyota Corolla for her to use but we have to wait to get it this summer when we go out to visit.

Wow. I cannot believe some of these high numbers. I mean, I know its your money and you earned it and can do whatever you want with it, but just whoa some of these parties cost so much money. Does a 16 year old really need a $10,000 party? How do you even spend that much...

Gee for the first time in a long time, I guess Im glad In live in a state where not much happens  Not only do these type of parties not happen around here, but if they did, people would be talking (and not in a good way) they'd probably wanna know who the hell you thought you were :rotfl:
