Need some ideas on what to serve on xmas eve. We have a family of 5 coming over, including 3 girls ranging in 6 - 14 years old. What do they drink? Soda? We dont' drink soda here so I don't know what to buy. Drink ideas for kids?

Here is what I have so far:
- Paella (what do you think of this idea?)
- hot dogs in blankets
- mini tacos
- veg tray w/dip
- crackers and cheese
- Salad w/pomegranite seeds, fennel (really nice and christmasy looking)
- chips and guacamole
- cheesecake w/fresh strawberries
- xmas cookies

Thank you so much!

Paella, mmmmmmm. My kids love to drink sparkling cider on special occasions. Or just buy some Hawaiian Punch.

Mmm! Can I come over?

You can make a punch with Hawaiian Punch red, some sprite, and sherbet. We don't drink sodas here either, but my girls love this punch.

Cider (hot or cold), hot cocoa, milk, chocolate milk, (or use food coloring to make red or green milk), apple juice, or grape juice.

We don't drink soda either, although my parents live on it and will bring their own tomorrow evening.

We drink iced tea, the kiddos will drink that (decaf), or apple/grape juice, and they also like lemonade.

I'm doing a roast in the crock pot tomorrow, I'll cook it with dry onion soup mix over the top and a can of Cream of Mushroom/Garlic soup. With it we will have salad and roasted red potatoes and other yummy veggies. :)
Nothing special to drink, we rarely have soda in the house so just juice, water or tea, maybe some hot chocolate or cider. Oh ya, I do have sparkling ciders so we will probably let the girls drink that. :)

This cracked me up- my husband and I also wandered the grocery isle last night trying to figure out what drink options to have for Christmas because we don't drink soda or sugary drinks at all. We opted for Martinelli's too because if there was leftover soda in our house it would sit there till it got old, we might actually drink the Martinelli's if it is leftover.

Your food choices sound great- yum!

Are they used to eating things like Paella and salads with fennel and pomegranate? Those might be a little "out there" for them. My family would love it, but I know many in my extended family would think it is too fancy or weird.

I would have some soda on hand. I hate, hate, hate tea and not a big coffee drinker. I am pretty picky about water and have to have it super cold. Soda is always a safe bet for me. I can't tell you how many parties, picnics, gatherings I have gone thirsty because there was no drink selection. We usually do coffee, bottled water, iced tea, milk, juice boxes, regular soda and diet along with beer and wine coolers at our gatherings.

How about milk??

Girls especially need calcium during their early years and through adolescence, for bone growth and prevention of later osteoporosis.

We don't do soda either, but on special occasions I get italian sodas & Orangina. (I get them at Trader Joes.) For the adults we have wine, beer and bottled water.
I think the rest of your menu sounds great!

My girls love the mini cans of sprite and coke. They also drink apple juice or Hawaiian punch.

We do the punch for our kids...(2) 2 liters of Ginger-Ale and a tub of rainbow sherbert. They love this! Or you could have the kids make their own Shirley Temples. Just put out glasses, a bottle of Grenadine (cherry syrup) and a bowl of cherries. That would be fun and easy. As far as food goes, we like the little meatballs you can get at Costco in the freezer section. Throw them in a crock-pot with a jar of alfredo sauce and let them cook all day. Put out little toothpicks to eat them with. Also, we do a lot of cut up fruit too. Our kids love that because they can use their toothpicks to eat them. :goodvibes

ETA: I saw that you were offering Christmas cookies too. If you're planning to make sugar cookies, you could leave them undecorated and let the kids frost them. Saves you the time of having to do it yourself and it will give the kids something fun to do. :thumbsup2

We are drink twins. I despise when I show up for a party and there is no soda, or only regular soda and no diet. Whenever I throw a party, I try to have a little of everything. Juice, soda (diet, regular, and clear), coffee, tea, wine, beer, etc. At our Sunday school party last week they only had some crazy Punch concoction that was too sweet for my DH and I to drink so we drank nothing, then came home and had a huge glass of Diet Coke. If we'd only known, we could have brought our own.

No soda in this house, we are skim milk or water drinkers! However if I am hostessing I stock up on juices, and perhaps 2% milk. For a party I would add soda .
at our house:
12/24 - salad bar fixings including crab, cheese plate, corn chowder, baguette with sundried tomatoe dipping sauce

12/25 - crock pot meatballs, crock pot little smokies, cheese and cracker plate ,veggies plate, spinach dip and bread

I'd say they probably drink soda (I'd have Coke or Pepsi and Sprite or 7-UP on hand). Most kids I know like apple juice, too, and most like chocolate milk.

ETA: My kids are only allowed sodas on the weekends and they don't have it every weekend.

Yeah, but I don't think one night is going to help or harm them.
